“Broken Country by Clare Leslie Hall is an unforgettable story of love, loss, and the choices that shape our lives…but it’s also a masterfully crafted mystery that will keep you guessing until the very last page. Seriously, that ending?! I did not see it coming.” —Reese Witherspoon

“Stirring and mysterious…fires directly at the human heart and hits the mark.” —Delia Owens, New York Times bestselling author of Where the Crawdads Sing

A love triangle unearths dangerous, deadly secrets from the past in this thrilling tale perfect for fans of The Paper Palace and Where the Crawdads Sing.

“The farmer is dead. He is dead, and all anyone wants to know is who killed him.”

Beth and her gentle, kind husband Frank are happily married, but their relationship relies on the past staying buried. But when Beth’s brother-in-law shoots a dog going after their sheep, Beth doesn’t realize that the gunshot will alter the course of their lives. For the dog belonged to none other than Gabriel Wolfe, the man Beth loved as a teenager—the man who broke her heart years ago. Gabriel has returned to the village with his young son Leo, a boy who reminds Beth very much of her own son, who died in a tragic accident.

As Beth is pulled back into Gabriel’s life, tensions around the village rise and dangerous secrets and jealousies from the past resurface, this time with deadly consequences. Beth is forced to make a choice between the woman she once was, and the woman she has become.

A sweeping love story with the pace and twists of a thriller, Broken Country is a novel of simmering passion, impossible choices, and explosive consequences that toggles between the past and present to explore the far-reaching legacy of first love.

Absolutely loved this book and the narrator had me believing she was Beth.

Profile Avatar Linda B. Apr 2025

I loved this book! So much love in many ways, heartbreak and resilience.

Profile Avatar amwaura1 Jan 2026

I enjoyed this one and would recommend it.

Profile Avatar Christina B. Oct 2025

Good book. Transports you to another time and place. Felt like a neighbor in the community watching it all go down

Profile Avatar Anonymous Sep 2025

Started off intriguing but the author’s constant switching between “before” and “after” makes it difficult for the reader to follow and find connections. The main character is also infuriating. The book also drags on and on towards the end. I could barely finish the novel because I found the main character so infuriating. The narrator was very good, however.

Profile Avatar Katy C. Sep 2025

a little slow going at the beginning but it really picks up and has some pretty good twists and turns

Profile Avatar Toni F. Sep 2025

dragged on.

Profile Avatar tseeliger Apr 2026

Such a great read. Full of such emotion, sacrifice, grace, mercy… and so much love. It’s one I’d read all over again. Highly recommend.

Profile Avatar Lyn H. Apr 2026

Very good book but you need to pay attention as reading switches from one time period to another. It’s easy enough to follow as long as you’re expecting the switches.

Profile Avatar Gina P. Apr 2026

Wonderful book! Great twist also!

Profile Avatar Sabra G. Apr 2026

The method of storytelling was both annoying and intriguing. As an audio listener, many times I was confused where I was in the narrative. I had to listen stop and listen twice several times. As a writer, though, I contemplated how the author used past and present stories to support each other without divulging the book’s climax(es). The next listen will be more enjoyable, although I did enjoy the first as well.

Heartbreaking and tender. A lesson in the consequences of the choices we make and the courage to do the right thing. Narrator was spectacular!

Profile Avatar Anonymous Mar 2026

This book evoked so many emotions similar to bridges over Madison County. It was so deep and rich in its storytelling. The narrator did such a good job. I didn’t even think about it being narrated I just felt immersed.

Profile Avatar Marlene G. Mar 2026

Great read and a double surprise ending. Loved every minute

Excellent book!

Profile Avatar Cdht63 Jan 2026

The story started off rather slowly, but I stuck with it and wasn’t disappointed. First off, the writing is fantastic! I will definitely be looking for more books by the author. The story was…ok. Rather repetitive in my opinion. Although I appreciate the complexity to the relationships, it came across as a bit far-fetched. The narrator was very good, however.

Profile Avatar Kelley L. Jan 2026

Great story. Took awhile to get into but then loved it.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jan 2026

The story totally drew me in.

Profile Avatar Elizabeth B. Jan 2026

I honestly thought this book was just okay. I never fell in love with it and it was more sad than anything. Plus I don't like the whole cheating in the book... but the narrator did amazing. So 3 stars for the book & 5 stars for the narrator.

Books that jump back and forth on timelines can be hard for me to conceptualize the story line, and this writing was no different. Good story, however. Compelling characters.

loved it! fantastic story with twists and turns

Profile Avatar Holly C. Aug 2025

Loved this book! It took about 20 minutes to grab me, but when it did, it was captivating. Narrator was great!

Profile Avatar Daphne Aug 2025

This was an enjoyable book to listen to. It had all the great elements - love triangle, true love, deception, tragedy and a few unexpected reveals. I usually read fast paced who-done-its and legal thrillers. This was a slower pace but very engaging.

Profile Avatar Antonell W. Aug 2025

Great novel, beautiful story, great character development, it keeps you guessing until the end.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jul 2025

This is another one that had RAVE reviews, and it was fine, but not race worthy. The twist was fine, but I was on to it pretty early.

Profile Avatar Lynne D. Jul 2025

not as good as Frozen River.

Profile Avatar Jacklyn V. Jun 2025

One of the best stories I have heard in a long time .It showed the difference young Love ( Lust) and pure adult love and enduring loyalty

Profile Avatar Leslie P. Jun 2025

This is a beautiful story of love and selflessness. As someone who has also suffered the loss of a child it really hit home and was oddly comforting in so many ways. I would high suggest it.

It was a little hard to follow at the beginning but then I couldn’t put it down.

Profile Avatar Kourtney K. Mar 2025

This is a gripping and amazing story!

Profile Avatar abhill Mar 2025

3.5 stars, but this is not an option, so I rounded up to 4. In fact, story itself gets a 4. But I take off .5 for descriptive sex scenes. Not for me. To each his own.

Profile Avatar Tanya B. Mar 2025

This is one of the best books I’ve ever read. Did not want to put it down. Don’t want to spoil anything but this is an absolute MUST read! Narrator was awesome, too.
