“Ingeniously plotted, and a grin-inducing delight.” —People
“Will keep young readers glued to the page…So when do I get the sequel?” —Beth McMullen, author of Mrs. Smith’s Spy School for Girls

In this thrilling new series that Stuart Gibbs called “a must-read,” Edgar Award winner James Ponti brings together five kids from all over the world and transforms them into real-life spies—perfect for fans of Spy School and Mrs. Smith’s Spy School for Girls.

Sara Martinez is a hacker. She recently broke into the New York City foster care system to expose her foster parents as cheats and lawbreakers. However, instead of being hailed as a hero, Sara finds herself facing years in a juvenile detention facility and banned from using computers for the same stretch of time. Enter Mother, a British spy who not only gets Sara released from jail but also offers her a chance to make a home for herself within a secret MI6 agency.

Operating out of a base in Scotland, the City Spies are five kids from various parts of the world. When they’re not attending the local boarding school, they’re honing their unique skills, such as sleight of hand, breaking and entering, observation, and explosives. All of these allow them to go places in the world of espionage where adults can’t.

Before she knows what she’s doing, Sara is heading to Paris for an international youth summit, hacking into a rival school’s computer to prevent them from winning a million euros, dangling thirty feet off the side of a building, and trying to stop a villain…all while navigating the complex dynamics of her new team.

No one said saving the world was easy…

Narrator: Lisa Flanagan My Reading Speed: 1.5x Have I Read The Book Before Listening to the Audio? No Overall Audio Impression: I was hooked from the very first chapter! This story was so much fun to listen to and try to figure out how this spy organization was going to work. I loved Mother’s moments the most I think and the whole mystery surrounding what happened with his wife and family (yes, the person in charge is called Mother but is a man). I also loved how Brooklyn (Sara) was ready to jump in right away, even though it became clear to her that she had no idea what it’d actually take to be a spy like the others. Overall the narrator kept the voices different enough from each other that I was able to know who was speaking, even without having heard the verbal tag yet. There was one section where a new character was introduced by Mother to the kids to do more specialized training (mid/end of book) who I had a bit of a hard time differentiating from Mother’s voice. Both had an accent of sorts that were pretty similar which is probably why it was harder for me. But other than that it was pretty great! I can’t wait to get to the next book! Favorite Scenes: Sara first meeting Mother How Mother met the kids ‘I knew you were there’ Training ‘I’m going to need to climb that wall’ Reader’s Notes: -this is the first of a series & must be read in order -this is told mainly from Sara/Brooklyn’s point of view; there are some parts told from other character’s points of views (but they follow the same storyline that Brooklyn’s pov follows with some flashbacks that tell how Mother met everyone on the team) -Brooklyn grew up in the foster system & it is mentioned that her most recent foster family only took in kids to collect the money and had locked her and another foster child in a closet (she is no longer in their custody by the first/second chapters) -there is some implied violence & death (it is mentioned that two bodies were found by law enforcement floating in water & that someone is planning on killing others)
