Unabridged Audiobook
I truly enjoyed this book. Pheby Dolores Brown was a strong character trying to survive during the time of slavery. I am usually not into books about slavery but this book kept my attention completely. I finished this book in 2 days. Although this is fictional, I loved that there was historical facts used to write this story. I researched the sites after reading. The characters were so real that they made you think about what you would have done if you were in that situation. A must read.
This was such a good book !
Listen! I don't really like to read about slavery as it is always a reminder of things often inhumane and hateful. This book is about that but it is also about more than that. A woman's struggles to survive and maintain not just for her but for the sake of her children, the only man she has ever loved and her history. A woman who was determined. I love this book. It made me look up the characters this book was based on. Truly amazing
The Devil's Half Acre, by Kristen Green, is an excellent account of Mary Lumpkin's story, with much better research. Why steal a true story and change it up? Narrator accents are not consistent.
Awesome storytelling from the author and the narrator really brought the story to life for me!
Loved this story!
Heart wrenching but one I will remember forever
This should be required reading for history classes! It was so hard to read, but so necessary! I will be thinking of this book and its characters for years to come!
The lives slaves lived, the lies owners told them, shameful. I loved this book because of the characters, the writing was excellent.
I learned a great deal about how people lived and survived through slavery.
I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed this book. It’s very obvious the author did her homework with the historical facts within this literary work. She dealt with a sensitive subject with grace.
This was one of my favorite books. Top 5 of my lifetime. The writing and narrator transports you. This book was heartbreaking at times, but beautiful.
Great book. I recommend it to anyone who wants an accurate assessment of the lives and times of enslaved peoples.
