Address to Young Men on the Proper Use of Greek Literature

From these two treatises of 4th century bishops and saints, Basil and Amphilochius, we learn the importance of learning and accumulating knowledge from ancient writings, both pagan and Christian. Wisdom can be drawn, that is in accordance with the Divine Scriptures, even from sources that have origins in the worship of false deities. Saint Basil urges us to learn how to distinguish between helpful virtues and damaging vices in Greek literature. Saint Amphilochius exhorts us to especially read the Holy Scriptures and submit the earthly things to Divine Wisdom. By studying the lore of heathens, we can be edified to prepare our bodies and souls for eternal life through drawing out the virtues within them. May the writings of these two Holy Fathers spur us on to obtain virtue, love, and good works.
