Summary
So often, Africa has been depicted simplistically as a uniform land of famines and safaris, poverty and strife, stripped of all nuance. In this bold and insightful book, Dipo Faloyin offers a much-needed corrective, weaving a vibrant tapestry of stories that bring to life Africa's rich diversity, communities, and histories.

Starting with an immersive description of the lively and complex urban life of Lagos, Faloyin unearths surprising truths about many African countries' colonial heritage and tells the story of the continent's struggles with democracy through seven dictatorships. With biting wit, he takes on the phenomenon of the white savior complex and brings to light the damage caused by charity campaigns of the past decades. Entering into the rivalries that energize the continent, Faloyin engages in the heated debate over which West African country makes the best jollof rice and describes the strange, incongruent beauty of the African Cup of Nations. With an eye toward the future promise of the continent, he explores the youth-led cultural and political movements that are defining and reimagining Africa on their own terms.

Africa Is Not a Country celebrates the energy and particularity of the continent's different cultures and communities, treating Africa with the respect it deserves.

As someone with a former “white savior” complex who has worked to reform his views through travel to Africa, this book is a must read. Yes, Africa has beauty, it has capacity, it has potential. Yes, the continent experiences issues. Yes, a lot of problems exist that were created from inside and outside the continent. But most importantly, Africa can be empowered by Africans and share their insights with the world, only making all of humanity better. Dipo Faloyin accurately and succinctly lays out all of the wonderful realities of the continent and highlights the immense diversity, skills, natural resources, and potential throughout the continent, yet doesn’t shy away from the issues that the continent has and is continuing to struggle through. This is a must read.

Very good read. A history lesson for me on some info that I had not discovered. Especially the horrible things that Europe countries did in Africa and to the African people.

A fascinating deep dive into a continent that is forgotten too many times, and how "the West" has shaped it and continues to do so.

I knew Africa was not a country and I study its geography but still consider myself pretty ignorant of the economies, cultures, histories, literary heritage, and cinema of most African countries. I noticed many of the negative reviews seem to be from readers deeply versed in histories and/or cultures of one or more African countries. Maybe their criticism is valid. I don’t know. I wasn’t expecting deep, penetrating analysis from a 300-page book about a continent. As a fairly ignorant reader I thought this was a compelling and informative primer on understanding the vast continent and its complexity.

The book was interesting and covered a topic I knew very little about. The author was doing a good job presenting his view but then launched an insulting attack on the Trump Presidency and stated the standard grievances of the left including some standard misrepresentations. President Trump and US politics had nothing to do with the topic of the book, which is about Africa. It seemed that the Author felt he needed to include it to earn some ideological stamp of approval. Spoiled his credibility for me. He also at points seemed like a graduate student's paper where although he had made his case and he felt the need to repeat his argument about young people being the future over and over. Otherwise a very interesting account of post colonial African history and culture with some interesting stories to support the Author's view.
