Summary
This is Irving Stone's powerful and passionate biographical novel of Michelangelo. His time: the turbulent Renaissance, the years of poisoning princes, warring popes, the all-powerful Medici family, the fanatic monk Savonarola. His loves: the frail and lovely daughter of Lorenzo de Medici; the ardent mistress of Marco Aldovrandi; and his last love--his greatest love--the beautiful, unhappy Vittoria Colonna. His genius: a God-driven fury from which he wrested the greatest art the world has ever known. Michelangelo Buonarotti, creator of 'David', painter of the Sistine ceiling, architect of the dome of St Peter's, lives once more in Irving Stone's marvellous book.

I must say I was little surprised as to how much I thoroughly enjoyed this listen. The narrator was excellent not only with the various characters but his "El magnifico" pronunciation of Italian names. I really felt like I got to know Michelangelo personally and was more enlightened at the end. It was fascinating to learn in an interesting way what he was thinking at the time of most of his major works without it being a total bore. Definitely one of the best listens in my experience. I can't wait to look at his works again next time I'm in Italy. Highly recommend.

Too bad I can only give 5 stars.. this book AND narrator both deserve 10 or more. I have a much greater appreciation for Michael Angelo than I did before. The title is spot on
