Summary
On October 12, 1972, a plane carrying a team of young rugby players crashed into the remote, snow-peaked Andes. Out of the forty-five original passengers and crew, only sixteen made it off the mountain alive. For ten excruciating weeks, they suffered deprivations beyond imagining, confronting nature head-on at its most furious and inhospitable. And to survive, these men and women not only had to keep their faith, they had to make an impossible decision: Should they eat the flesh of their dead friends? A remarkable story of endurance and determination, Alive is the dramatic bestselling account of one of the most harrowing quests for survival in modern times.

I learned that much of this book is false or the author misunderstood the survivors of this plane crash. At the time, shortly after their rescue, the survivors wanted to document their stories. So they chose Piers Read. The book didn't come out like they expected. The author never visited the crash site, which is so central to the story of the survivors' fight for their lives. An infinitely better book is "Society of Snow." It's incredible how these young men, some teenagers, had to make the hard choice of living or dying. And it's more than that, they constantly were battling the weather conditions and the challenges of living in the high Andes without any high altitude essentials for living. What's worst is that the world gave them up for dead. A search party was called off after 10 days, mostly because of the notion that nobody had ever survived a plane crash in the Andes.

I wished the narrator had a Spanish accent, instead of English to be more authentic.

This book was read entirely too fast! It made it hard to follow.

Bad choice for narrator.

Profile Avatar Hilary R. Sep 2024

FAR too long, tedious and repetitious. So many different foreign names that I had absolutely no idea who the narrator was speaking of and zero interest in knowing the answer. Endless accounts of the most abhorrent banal detail of bodily functions. The worst listen this year.

The book was a great story of survival and how a greatness was accomplished in the face of overwhelming adversity.
