Summary:

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Weiner

Allison Weiss got her happy ending—a handsome husband, adorable daughter, a job she loves, and the big house in the suburbs. But while waiting in the pediatrician’s office, she opens a magazine to a quiz about addiction and starts to wonder…Is a Percocet at the end of the day really different from a glass of wine? Is it such a bad thing to pop a Vicodin after a brutal Jump & Pump class…or if your husband ignores you?

The pills help her manage the realities of her good-looking life: that her husband is distant, that her daughter is acting out, that her father’s Alzheimer’s is worsening and her mother is barely managing to cope. She tells herself that they let her make it through her days…but what if her increasing drug use, a habit that’s becoming expensive and hard to hide, is turning into her biggest problem of all?

With a sparkling comedic touch and a cast of unforgettable characters, this remarkable story of a woman’s slide into addiction and struggle to find her way back up again is Jennifer Weiner’s most masterful work yet.

I really enjoyed this book! It was an easy book to listen to and the narrative was as easy to follow! I have read many of Weiner's books and have enjoyed all of them so far!

First of all I have to say that the description of this book is incorrect--Allison does not invent anything and she doesn't jump from being poor to wealthy. She's a successful blogger who finds herself making more money than her husband, a journalist who, thanks to the industry going down the tank, is now doing triple the work for little pay. This is important because it's one of the factors that contributes to her downfall into an addiction to prescription pain pills. I loved this book because it helped me explore a world I've never experienced--drug addiction. From the outside looking in, so many of us are quick to judge those who suffer from addiction, but this book does a wonderful job of taking you every step of the way with Allison, understanding how and why she's so easily susceptible to the addiction, and guiding you through the internal struggle she has with "Just one more pill. I'm not an addict. I could quit if I wanted to. One more, today, because I NEED it, and I promise, tomorrow I'll quit cold turkey. Never again." Fascinating. It's a story about hitting bottom and picking up the pieces. I will probably listen to it again in a few years. BUT--side note--the narrator's voice for the child is absolutely horrendous.

love the story but hate the narrators voice when she speaks as the child...ugh makes me want to pull my hair out

  • Lindsay Lanphere

Very realistic and excellent story. The narrator really does the audiobook justice.
