Unabridged Audiobook
Underwhelming for me after all the hype.
The narrator captured the personality of the character perfectly
Boring ! If I was her therapist I would have payed her for skipping the appointments. If this author wrote with a sense of humor, and wit, I would have thought that she was trying to emulate Erica Jong's classic - Fear of flying (1975) which I’d recommend, or contemporary Gillian Anderson - that is if you are interested in the pop culture references to the middle class woman sexuality and related issues.
Huge disappointment! When will women stop abandoning themselves for men’s attention?! You’d think by 45 she’s have a bit more experience in life or some bit of wisdom to pass on as hitting menopause but again it’s all about the obsession of staying young and fuckable for men. Do better !! What an embarrassment for womankind ! Miranda July has failed me. I’ve loved everything she’s done, up until this point. The desperation is humiliating. Imagine losing your whole self over trying to seduce a young married man?! Smdh. I wouldn’t have that. No self esteem. She certainly hasn’t aged well.
There is an effort present in this novel – to portray a full and variable spectrum of emotions of a woman going through something new. Unfortunately that woman is self-entitled, shallow and whiny. That effort of writing that almost reaches something deeper in the characters and the story itself, always stops short right before making it more meaningful and replaces the meaning with a bodily function and fluids (an old trick no one seems to be shocked about anymore). Seeing the praises, I was expecting if not literature than at least a celebration of life’s complexities or wit. In my humble opinion, the novel has neither. As a liberal and conscious woman of the modern age, I felt like the book tried to represent me, but it felt more as if the novel gaslighted women and reduced to primitive simplicity. Maybe the last ⅓ of the book holds all the revelations and nuances that are worth 5 stars, but I cannot bear to waist time any further. All being said, the narrator’s (the author) voice is pleasant, fitting and well placed, got me so far.
Content is absolutely garbage. Author should have hired a professional narrator. Her voice is monotone, inaudible at times and lack energy. Complete waste of time and money.
A terrible book.
So bad - truly depressing and the character’s selfishness is .. unenjoyable
Listening this book felt like attending a gender studies class at Sarah Lawrence. It was somewhat thought provoking but ultimately not my cup of tea. I'll go back to dystopian thrillers and historical novels, thank you very much.
If this is the first Great American menopause novel will someone pretty please show up and do better? I’ve rarely come across a more self-involved, generally bland main character. She thinks she’s subversive but is simply another boring sad sack who must blow up their lives to feel edgy and relevant.
This book was intriguing, smart , well written, and funny. The theme is definitely a liberal view point but I love that part of the story - it’s not the same old story - just never knowing what’s coming next!
A great and unique work. Could have safely been cut down by 1/3 by a skilled editor. But a great listen nevertheless.
This was 100%, hands down, the absolute best audiobook I’ve ever listened to, and I’ve listen to a LOT of prize winning Audiobooks. I don’t even know how to put into words my feelings about this book, I wish I did, Miranda July deserves an award.
100 Percent loving this.
Protagonist kept my attention, sometimes I thought she was kind of awful and other times I empathized . It’s been many years since I last viewed or read something by July, brings me back, in a good way.
