A beautiful, stunningly ambitious novel about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II

Marie Laure lives with her father in Paris within walking distance of the Museum of Natural History where he works as the master of the locks (there are thousands of locks in the museum). When she is six, she goes blind, and her father builds her a model of their neighborhood, every house, every manhole, so she can memorize it with her fingers and navigate the real streets with her feet and cane. When the Germans occupy Paris, father and daughter flee to Saint-Malo on the Brittany coast, where Marie-Laure’s agoraphobic great uncle lives in a tall, narrow house by the sea wall.

In another world in Germany, an orphan boy, Werner, grows up with his younger sister, Jutta, both enchanted by a crude radio Werner finds. He becomes a master at building and fixing radios, a talent that wins him a place at an elite and brutal military academy and, ultimately, makes him a highly specialized tracker of the Resistance. Werner travels through the heart of Hitler Youth to the far-flung outskirts of Russia, and finally into Saint-Malo, where his path converges with Marie-Laure.

Doerr’s gorgeous combination of soaring imagination with observation is electric. Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner, Doerr illuminates the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another. Ten years in the writing, All the Light We Cannot See is his most ambitious and dazzling work.

Loved this well written story. Such in depth character analysis of the protagonists, and captured their experiences and feelings incredibly well. You do need to pay attention though, as the chapters can switch between characters and past/present times.

A very moving story of life in Europe during WWII, told from the perspective of two protagonists from opposing sides. A heartbreaking story of the reality of war for those at home and on the front, told through breathtakingly beautiful prose. The plot, however, is woven in it jumps back and forth through time, which does not lend itself nicely to the audiobook format.

Beautiful story. Humanised some of the soldiers fighting on what History views as the "wrong side". One of those stories that just sit with you long after the last page is read.

Incredible book, brought to life skillfully by the narrator. Don’t be put off by the first ten minutes of the reading - it starts in a disjointed way but stick with it!

This was a great book which I really enjoyed. Written from the perspectives of two young people and their lives on opposing sides during World War 2. The characters were well developed and the descriptions of how Marie-Laurre navigated and experienced her surroundings as a blind person were excellent. I would definitely recommend this book.

I did appreciate this book as being so beautifully written, and I enjoyed listening to it- I just found my mind wandering at times and it didn’t have me riveted.

An enjoyable and engaging story of 2 young people from different backgrounds & on opposite sides from the wars' perspective. Highly recommended if you enjoy true to life accounts of World War 2. I did find the narrator hard to follow at times but she has a good grasp of French & German language. Enjoy!

A fantastic voice and accent.

A very good book but quite sad and moving with lots of detail of how difficult life was during WW11

This novel weaves some many stories together beautifully and painfully. A story of how, miraculously, some people were able to survive WWII, while others didn't.
