The Almost Moon

Unabridged Audiobook

Written By: Alice Sebold

Narrated By: Joan Allen

Publisher: Hachette Book Group USA

Date: October 2007

Duration: 9 hours 30 minutes

Summary:

For years Helen Knightly has given her life to others: to her haunted mother, to her enigmatic father, to her husband and grown children. When she finally crosses a terrible boundary, her life comes rushing in at her in a way she never could have imagined.

Unfolding over the next twenty-four hours, this searing, fast-paced audiobook explores the complex ties between mothers and daughters, wives and lovers, the meaning of devotion, and the line between love and hate. It is a challenging, moving, gripping story, written with the fluidity and strength of voice that only Alice Sebold has.

This was a very difficult listen for me. Though the premise from the overview was intriguing, the book didn't deliver intrigue or satisfaction. The graphic details of the main character's life were sad, demeaning, and almost robotic in delivery. The character goes through a tremendous tragedy and very little changes in her. There is no conflict or struggle. To say that it was anticlimatic would be an understatement.

it took me a while to get into this book, then i was into it and really interested in what was happening, then she ends it like that?! she had to know her readers would be frustrated by that ending...

Kept me on edge most of the time, was anxious to find out what would happen and liked that about it. Seabold's usual eerie writing and descriptions come in which everyone has their own opinion about, just didn't like the ending. Mostly a let down and just kind of drops off with some ends still pretty loose and needing to be tied up.

I enjoyed this book for the most part. The author kept me interested and at times entertained. However the book was depressing and the ending was a real let down. I thought I missed the last cd, but finally realized this was the authors bow out -- truly disappointing.

From the first line, this book is unstoppable. I ordinarily listen to audiobooks during my frequent, 4-hour drives. This one kept me in parking lots, reluctant to switch off my engine and miss an instant. Sebold has a knack of writing the most preposterous event so matter-of-factly that you can see yourself within her story, without missing a beat. A must-listen.

I found this book to be insufferably boring, not at all like the description of a "fast paced" audio book. Although the book opens some interesting topics, such as the "complex ties between mothers and daughters, wives and lovers, . . . ." it addresses them in such a shallow, simple manner, that you are left empty and hollow. The story is neither moving or gripping. The ending is even more disappointing then the rest of the book. Basically this book is a big waste of time and a download credit.

Wow...this book took off in a direction I wasn't expecting. It was a gift and I didn't know anything about the storyline. But it kept me entertained.... I didn't want to put it down. 3 stars for that. But she lost me in the end. There was an anti climatic finish. The ending seemed hurried and not put together well. Would I recommend this book to my book-loving gal pals? I'm not too sure I would.
