The American Dog Epidemic: Why Dog Behavior Goes Wrong and a Path to Rescue Us All

What if understanding why your dog behaves this way is the key to changing it?

When a dog is anxious, reactive, aggressive, fearful, overly excited, or will not listen, most advice focuses only on stopping it. The American Dog Epidemic goes beyond obedience to explain the psychology behind the behavior.

With more than twenty years of experience, dog trainer Jackie Eckert presents a step-by-step, psychology-based approach to changing behavior.

Dogs learn from every interaction, including lessons no one intended to teach. This book reveals how ordinary, well-intentioned actions can create confusion, insecurity, and problem behavior. Instead of relying on treats, commands, corrections, or temporary fixes, it explains what your dog's behavior means, why it is happening, and what to do differently for lasting change.

Inside, you will find practical guidance to help you:

- Understand why your dog becomes emotional and hard to control
- Discover why your dog does not listen
- Communicate simply so your dog understands what you want, listens, and responds
- See how you and others affect your dog's behavior without realizing it
- Guide your dog through difficult moments to change feelings and behavior
- Lead with confidence so your dog feels protected and respects what you say

Whether you are facing a behavior problem, thinking about getting a dog, or working professionally with dogs, this book will change how you understand and respond to dogs.

A Note to Listeners: This book challenges accepted beliefs about dogs and training. Some conclusions may surprise or upset listeners. That challenge is intentional. For those willing to consider behavior from the dog's point of view, it offers clearer understanding, practical answers, and a stronger path forward. Change begins with understanding why the behavior happens and knowing what to do next.
