Summary
A wildly entertaining debut from Michelle McGill-Vargas, American Ghoul deftly combines horror and social commentary—with a dash of buddy comedy—in an innovative twist on the vampire genre.

You can’t kill someone who’s already dead.

That’s what Lavinia keeps telling her jailer after—allegedly—killing her mistress, Simone Arceneau. But how could Simone be dead when she was taking callers just a few minutes before? And why was her house always so dark?

Lavinia, a recently freed slave, met Simone, a recently undead vampire, by chance on a plantation in post–Civil War Georgia. With nothing remaining for either woman in the South, the two form a fast friendship and head north. However, Lavinia quickly learns that teaming up with this white woman may be more than she bargained for.

Simone is reckless and impulsive—which would’ve been bad enough on its own, but when combined with her particular diet, Lavinia finds herself in way over her head. As she is forced to repeatedly compromise her morals and struggles to make lasting human connections, Lavinia begins to wonder, is she truly free or has she merely exchanged one form of enslavement for another? As bodies start to pile up in the small Indiana town they’ve settled in, people start to take a second look at the two newcomers, and Simone and Lavinia’s relationship is stretched to its breaking point …

I was enchanted from the first chapter. Loved the story, really loved the narator. Her smooth voice transitioned perfectly with each character.

I enjoyed the book and how it ended.

I really loved this book. It's a buddy comedy gone horribly, wrongly weird. Doesn't need to be cheapened with a sequel. The book was perfect just by itself. Narrator did a great job as well. I got a copy as a VIP pick. Proof that there are sometimes real gems in those freebies so don't neglect them!

the story is just as good as the narrator! I love vampire stories, and I wasn't disappointed in this one. I really appreciated Simone and Lavinia's complex (and toxic) relationship.

Loved the book and the narrator.

Good story. Kept me interested the whole time. Only drawback is the ending felt unfinished.

The book was great. wasn't sure what to expect going into it, but the flow made me feel like I was listening to friend tell me a story. The narrator really helped bring each character to life, almost felt like a cast of people. Would probably pick other titles I may not have normally picked if done by this person.

Is there going to be a book two because I need it!!!

Profile Avatar DaKillaKat Jan 2025

I started this book thinking it was strange but intriguing. I was enthralled the entire time and really hope for a sequel.

Wasn’t a fan. Didn’t finish it. Glad I got it free as a VIP option. Slow moving. I usually enjoy this genre but not this one.

One word EXCELLENT! This book is well written with constant captivation at every turn. I literally stopped everything I was doing to just sit and listen! I can’t wait for a next book! The narrator was the cherry on top!

snooze. didn't finish it after about halfway. It is a book that is more aimed for 12 and 13-year-olds. would not recommend.

Profile Avatar Blacksheep Dec 2024

Loved it. Will gladly listen again in the future

I really enjoyed this book. The narrator was magnificent! If there is a part 2 I will definitely be getting it!

Would’ve given 5⭐️ but after a while, the repetitiveness of: conflict-scheme-deal with threat-hide-pass time-return to normal-repeat wore on me. Other than that, great book. Hope there’s a 2nd!

Creative take on a vampire book that is more about the bonds of connection to others. Definitely worth the listen.

Wonderful engaging story. Ending was too abrupt…but created anticipation for Part 2!!!! Narrator was absolutely one of the best I’ve heard. Thoroughly enjoyed this book.
