Writing a book on the heritage of the US is definitely a challenge. I found it very disappointing that the author chose not to include any reference to the role Christianity played in the lead up to the declaration and in particular to the framing of the US Constitution. He seemed to go out of his way to not include the influence of George Whitfield in the colonial days of the country. Similarly, his reference of Alexis de Tocqueville only included secular context. He failed to include Alexis’ statement regarding America being great because of the moral values/character taught in her churches. To fail to include any reference to the Christian or even spiritual aspects of the country’s founding leaves out a critical element of the country’s heritage.
