Dana Schwartz’s Anatomy: A Love Story is a gothic tale full of mystery and romance.

Hazel Sinnett is a lady who wants to be a surgeon more than she wants to marry.

Jack Currer is a resurrection man who’s just trying to survive in a city where it’s too easy to die.

When the two of them have a chance encounter outside the Edinburgh Anatomist’s Society, Hazel thinks nothing of it at first. But after she gets kicked out of renowned surgeon Dr. Beecham’s lectures for being the wrong gender, she realizes that her new acquaintance might be more helpful than she first thought. Because Hazel has made a deal with Dr. Beecham: if she can pass the medical examination on her own, Beecham will allow her to continue her medical career. Without official lessons, though, Hazel will need more than just her books—she’ll need corpses to study.

Lucky that she’s made the acquaintance of someone who digs them up for a living, then.

But Jack has his own problems: strange men have been seen skulking around cemeteries, his friends are disappearing off the streets, and the dreaded Roman Fever, which wiped out thousands a few years ago, is back with a vengeance. Nobody important cares—until Hazel.

Now, Hazel and Jack must work together to uncover the secrets buried not just in unmarked graves, but in the very heart of Edinburgh society.

Great read, or listen in this case. I did feel a bit let down at the end, some details were never satisfactorily explained buy I enjoyed it.

I LOVE the narrators voice. Scottish accents are beautiful to me! I also love that the book has a hint of modern words, and names, such as throwing in Beetlejuice! It adds the perfect amount of comedic relief, while the story itself is BEAUTIFUL. I love that the main character thinks more modern about women’s roles!

This was compelling and smart and well written. I loved the twist but felt it came as an odd afterthought. As if the author only thought of this solution at the time of writing the ending. I am still interested enough to continue to the next in the series.

I saw hints of the ending throughout the book but I still thought it was too much for it. I know a lot of complaints about this book is the minimal romance but I honestly thought there was a lot of it and could’ve done with less a i really enjoyed I though and I felt the voice of Hazel was truthful to her age and I loved her love to her career

ENJOYED THE BOOK VERY MUCH. I THOUGHT THE ENDING DID NOT FIT THE REST OF THE BOOK - KIND OF A SURPRISE. THOUGHT THE BOOK BUILT UP THROUGHOUT THE CHAPTERS, BUT WAS A LITTLE LET DOWN AT THE END.
