Unabridged Audiobook
Let me start by saying that I am a huge fan of Charlie Kaufman s movies (except for Synecdoche, NY. That one was painful to watch). So I was very curious about this novel. But now, 25 hours later, I’m not sure what to say about it. On one hand it is a fascinating journey into the brain of Kaufman, but not necessarily an enjoyable one. There is absolutely no plot to this thing. There’s barely a theme running from beginning to end. Yet it is consistently funny, if also irritating. It is scathingly satirical and highly critical, with most of its criticism aimed directly at the films of Charlie Kaufman. I got the feeling he was writing it as a challenge: read this if you dare. I also got the feeling that he was just writing whatever came into his head at that moment, without much of a plan as to what would happen next. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but that makes it harder to feel any urge to find out what happens next. (I have the same criticism of Thomas Pynchon’s novels.) I fell asleep at various times listening to it, deliberately at some points, knowing that I wouldn’t miss any plot points with remembering. So there are big chinks of it I missed. But I don’t think it matters.
Love charlie kaufman, really funny and mind bending listen. Rambling at some points but I was engaged the whole timm!
Strong at times, but rambling at others. Sometimes funny, but sometimes boring. I honestly don’t know what to think of this book.
Well, it's definitely a different kind of read. Strange, funny at times, somewhat hard to follow as B is a confusing, mind mixed, crazy, neurotic, over obsessed, unusual person. I couldn't imagine having a thought process like his. The book is a dictionary in itself, with words I had to look up for definition, old, out dated words no longer in current dictionary. I recommend taking a couple of days, or more to read this book. Its a change from other books. Narrative is great, give it a go!
