Summary
Now a National Bestseller!

Climate change is real but it’s not the end of the world. It is not even our most serious environmental problem.

Michael Shellenberger has been fighting for a greener planet for decades. He helped save the world’s last unprotected redwoods. He co-created the predecessor to today’s Green New Deal. And he led a successful effort by climate scientists and activists to keep nuclear plants operating, preventing a spike of emissions.

But in 2019, as some claimed “billions of people are going to die,” contributing to rising anxiety, including among adolescents, Shellenberger decided that, as a lifelong environmental activist, leading energy expert, and father of a teenage daughter, he needed to speak out to separate science from fiction.

Despite decades of news media attention, many remain ignorant of basic facts. Carbon emissions peaked and have been declining in most developed nations for over a decade. Deaths from extreme weather, even in poor nations, declined 80 percent over the last four decades. And the risk of Earth warming to very high temperatures is increasingly unlikely thanks to slowing population growth and abundant natural gas.

Curiously, the people who are the most alarmist about the problems also tend to oppose the obvious solutions.

What’s really behind the rise of apocalyptic environmentalism? There are powerful financial interests. There are desires for status and power. But most of all there is a desire among supposedly secular people for transcendence. This spiritual impulse can be natural and healthy. But in preaching fear without love, and guilt without redemption, the new religion is failing to satisfy our deepest psychological and existential needs.

Brilliant. At last a bit of reason. Without radical positioning. Facts and numbers. Less feelings and more data. Conciliatory. Balanced. Brilliant.

Excellent, great book!! Thoughtfully written drawing from a life time of real world experience in the field. Data driven, well argued, factual and historical. The fact that the author is a dedicated environmentalist with skin in the game gives this work enormous credibility. Narrator is excellent also. Can't recommend enough.

This book is an eye opener to the new and sad Climate Change religion/cult of the upper middle elites. If you want to learn the real facts take some time to read this book.

This book is ideal for anyone kept awake by unrealistic fears of exestential immanent castastrophe from climate change. The author was a former believer in anthropormorphic global warming till he did in depth research. The book outlines the errors, distortions and outright deception and corrpuption behind the climate change movement. Highly recommended.

This is a must read (or listen to) book. Well-documented, accessible information to help us make sense of all the hype associated with this very important issue. We need more balance and facts to help us make the best decisions for how to move forward with caring for our planet AND living on our planet--this book helps with that.

Industry shill with no credibility.

An absolute eye opener backed up with real scientific data rather than exaggerated fear mongering

This book demonstrates how to look at both sides of an argument come to a common sense solution for the environment while respecting the rights of humans. I appreciate how he takes a step back an asks the question "Are our environmental policies helping or hurting?" and then searches for the answer instead of standing in an echo chamber of like minds to validate his stance on the issue
