Unabridged Audiobook
The book starts at the point after equestrian Meg lost her beloved horse and was severely injured while competing. The teenager bruised and battered physically, mentally and emotionally is facing a summer of despair, when an opportunity is offered from family friends who live near her family's summer home. Despite her mother's hesitancy to let her stay on the island all alone for the summer, Meg jumps at the chance to work at the B&B so as to get her mind off the lose. Jared, a resident of the island knows the devastation of lose too having recently lost his father. He had to leave college to take up the responsibilities of the family farm now that it is just his mother and him. Meg and Jared fast become friends united in healing from their respective loses. They bond even more when Meg is given an Appaloosa in lieu of payment for a side job. Jared offers to house the horse on the farm for her, connecting them even more. The summer wasn't what either expected, but it was the summer they each needed to heal from their losses. Even though there is a prequel to this series, Six-Month Horse, which I have not read prior to listening to this book, I didn't get the sense I was missing info from that book. Aware there is a prequel, I am drawn to circle back to it before continuing forward in the series. I will say that the book ends not so much in a cliffhanger, but is concluded as an end for now with a promise of more to come in the next book. Sole narrator Cody Schraeger provides a pleasant listening experience of this young adult coming of age book. Surprisingly, the choice to have a male narrator when the book is mainly in a female POV wasn't as jarring as I would expect. I was given a copy of the audio book and already had owned the ebook version.
