Summary
A true 20th-century classic from the Nobel Prize-winning author of The Sound and the Fury: the famed harrowing account of the Bundren family’s odyssey across the Mississippi countryside to bury Addie, their wife and mother.

As I Lay Dying is one of the most influential novels in American fiction in structure, style, and drama. Narrated in turn by each of the family members, including Addie herself as well as others, the novel ranges in mood from dark comedy to the deepest pathos.

“I set out deliberately to write a tour-de-force. Before I ever put pen to paper and set down the first word I knew what the last word would be and almost where the last period would fall.” —William Faulkner on As I Lay Dying

So great to reread the classics.

Great novel, terrible narration. This production made me realize that I really dislike audiobooks that use different readers for different characters. I just want one narrator who is capable of pulling off successfully different voices, male and female. A novel is NOT a play! One narrator, one voice—the voice of the novel. A novel is one voice underlying all the voices of the characters. I found this production unbearable. Terrible attempts at dialect, if attempts were even made. The narrator who did Darl was especially bad. He made really no attempt at the dialect, sounded too old for the character, spoke monotonously, and VERY slowly. His pace added probably an unnecessary extra two hours to this reading, and undermines the pace of the novel. I gave up trying to give this reading a chance and abandoned it not too far into it. Listen to “Absalom, Absalom” instead.
