Summary
MEET DETECTIVE ALICE ROSSI IN THIS BRILLIANT NEW CRIME SERIES.

A brand-new mystery from #1 bestselling author Helen H. Durrant that will have you gripped from start to explosive finish.

A female serial killer with a deadly agenda. The detective who must stop her. Luxury holiday lodges in the stunning Peak District. The game begins . . .

Callum is lured to an isolated boathouse by an attractive older woman. When she gets him alone, she knocks him out with a single blow. As he wakes up, her voice comes out of the darkness, “You’re a sprat to catch a mackerel”.

Surrounded by hills and lakes, Still Waters is home to a close-knit community of wealthy retirees. It’s an unlikely setting for violence. The police don’t take Callum’s disappearance seriously: he’s 24-years-old, after all. But Callum’s mother, a Still Waters resident, knows that something is very wrong.

Then a body is discovered floating in the lake. Head bashed in. But it’s not Callum.

And someone tweets: Come out to play one last time, Alice. Still Waters run deep. #MadHatter.

That’s when DCI Alice Rossi is called in. She’s back.

Good book although it takes just a little while to grasp it, but good action and characters, good narrator. I liked it

The accent was rough for me

Profile Avatar Martha Yee Oct 2025

The storyline was good and it had a lot of plot twists. The narration was easy on the ears. Overall I liked it and I would recommend it.

This is a great book! I didn’t want to stop listening!

This audiobook was just okay. The plot was predictable from early on, and the ending landed exactly where I expected. The narrator had a pleasant voice, but the accent was so heavy that I kept having to replay sections — and still missed bits of the story. Overall, nothing exciting, nothing memorable. A disappointing listen, and not one I’d recommend.

This was one of my VIP free choices and I am so glad I picked it. Great location for a murder mystery. The characters are great and you get drawn into the story very quickly. You will not be able to turn it off.

Profile Avatar Schildress Jun 2025

Great read. It was suspenseful and kept me guessing.

Profile Avatar Nicky D. Jun 2025

Marvellous twists and turns brought to life by a great narrator. This is a whodunnit with more depth than the average.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jun 2025

Narrator is great and there is lot of twist in the story to keep it going.

Profile Avatar J R. Mar 2025

Good road trip listen. Reader was a bit distracting/hard to follow occasionally.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jan 2025

Decent story, good writing style, but you can see the plot twist coming from character ten. It’s a good book to listen to.

A good read, I read it in a day. My only complaint, as I got to the end it became a bit predictable. that being said, I enjoyed it enough to purchase the 2nd in the series. The narration was pretty good too

Started slowly then picked up

Profile Avatar Anonymous Nov 2024

very drawn out with not a great ending. thought narrator voice was too young to be believe for main character

I tried to listen to this book on five occasions but just could not get into it, I believe it's the narrator!

Profile Avatar Teresa F. Sep 2024

I’m not British, the narrators sometimes were hard for me to understand. The book was a VP free book and the best free book I have listened to, if you like murder fictions, you will like this audio book.

Overall I found this to be a relatively okay crime novel. There are some pretty decent plot points and little details to keep you engaged in the story beats but I don’t feel like it reaches any particularly high points. The characters are likable, detective Rossi’s family dynamic is fairly interesting, and how she is connected to this recent murder spree is pretty neat but I feel like the books natural boiling point never really got the time it needed to cook. Everything kind of felt like stuff was happening with very little build up. By the time it was all said and done I wasn’t really surprised or bitting at the bit to find out the mystery. Still pretty fun overall and could still appeal to someone more than it did me!

DCI Rossi is brilliant one moment then completely naive the next. The inconsistency of her character is frustrating. Narration was excellent and was effective in keeping all the various characters straight. After years of pristine crime commission the villainess makes a dubious mistake that leads to her arrest…….think this author took an easy turn to close out the book.

Enjoyed this read, book is good, I reserve 5 stars for superior.

I realize I chose a book with a serial killer. But the devastation perpetrated was more than u could stomach. It’s back to Cosy Mysteries for me.

Profile Avatar Richard S. Aug 2024

Decent story, good narration, but the dialogue is not indicative of how people speak in real life, and that kept pulling me out of the story. Since this was in the monthly deal to select a freebie, I can't complain.

Profile Avatar Barbra H. Aug 2024

Most of the last hour was really only about setting up future books. Not a bad thing, but a little too much time spent in my opinion.

Profile Avatar Nelia Burger Aug 2024

beginning was confusing, and the accent threw my off guard....but the end was good

Profile Avatar Anonymous Aug 2024

Good book, plot & twists. Although I did find it a bit predictable in some places.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jul 2024

Excellent book and narrator!

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jul 2024

Plot twisting detective novel, if not from the UK the narratore can sometimes be a bit difficult to follów due to accent.

Profile Avatar John N. Jul 2024

A very good listen. Great plot - I guessed completely wrongly and missed the twist entirely! The narrator is excellent too. Can’t fault it.
