Summary
ASSISTANT WANTED: Notorious, high-ranking villain seeks loyal, levelheaded assistant for unspecified office duties, supporting staff for random mayhem, terror, and other Dark Things In General. Discretion a must. Excellent benefits.

With ailing family to support, Evie Sage's employment status isn't just important, it's vital. So when a mishap with Rennedawn's most infamous Villain results in a job offer—naturally, she says yes. No job is perfect, of course, but even less so when you develop a teeny crush on your terrifying, temperamental, and undeniably hot boss. Don't find evil so attractive, Evie.

But just when she's getting used to severed heads suspended from the ceiling and the odd squish of an errant eyeball beneath her heel, Evie suspects this dungeon has a huge rat . . . and not just the literal kind. Because something rotten is growing in the kingdom of Rennedawn, and someone wants to take the Villain—and his entire nefarious empire—out.

Now Evie must not only resist drooling over her boss but also figure out exactly who is sabotaging his work . . . and ensure he makes them pay.

After all, a good job is hard to find.

Contains mature themes.

The narrator has a lovely voice, but it sounds like chatgpt just used her voice to tell the story. every sentence has an absurdly long pause after. I can't even get through this story because the narrator's style is so distracting.

The narrator is probably an AI generated. Very poor acting with no continuity between sentences. The story has no conclusion and you need to read the sequel. I will no continue the series.

DNF. This was a light, fun story that was destroyed by a narrator who read as though telling a small child a bedtime tale. As though she feared her listeners would not understand if she didn’t take on a tragically slow pace and over-enunciate each word.

Narrator sounded A.i. at time but all in all it was a Pretty good book might even continue the series.

Don’t know about the story because I couldn’t get past the first few sentences with the AI narrator. If I wanted a synthetic voice to read the story to me, I would just get the kindle version and use that read aloud function. The pint of an audiobook is for a human to read the story and add inflection and feeling to the words. This was pretty disappointing.

Missing too much plot for smut.

narrator sounds like AI and it's not enjoyable

The narrator in this book is absolutely awful. The voice is completely emotionless and has a monotone way of speaking that drives me up the wall... I have NEVER DNFd a book, but until I get the physical copy of this book, I can not stand to finish more than two minutes of it.

I love this searies.for sure a top read

Profile Avatar Melissa S. Nov 2025

I love the series, the world and character building are detailed enough to give a great image without being boring. They are campy and fun but perfect to listen to while driving particularly if traffic is bad.

Profile Avatar Aly N. Nov 2025

This was not what I thought it would be like and not in a good way. There was very little scene or character building. The plot was predictable. I wanted to turn use of the word "incredulously" into a drinking game.

This may be the worst narrator I have ever heard. Surely this is AI. Or she thinks she is reading to 5 year olds.... Every punctuation mark gets a dramatic pause and every sentence has the same rhythm, no matter whether it is internal monolog or descriptive or action. Terrible. I would recommend you absolutely do not listen to this book. Just read it.

i would never have picked this book to read had i not had my audiobook app....saying that...i was slow to get into this book...but once i did...i didnt stop listening til i was almost done...did nothing all day....but hold hope for love....and giggled when it done cause i wanted to hear more.......thank you for reminding me how i still like a good story without all the suspence and drama....

Im sure the book is fine but I couldn't even get through the first track. The narrator is awful and potentially AI. She reads the words all out of sorts and the ends of sentence just bleed together. Its robotic and emotionless. Not a great listen at all.

Love!

Profile Avatar Christin T. Sep 2025

Enjoyed the story. Seemed more world building and like the entire book was a setup for more. Diving into the next book to see how the rest of the series goes.

The narrator is AWFUL. I got two minutes in and I’m DNFing. At least it was a free download but I still feel duped by how bad the narrator is. Absolutely insane that this passed quality checks and was published. Maybe I’ll circle back and read the hard copy once I’m not mad at how bad this narrator was.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Sep 2025

I wish I didn't waste my credit on this book. I could not finish. It was honestly boring. I couldn't make myself finish it.

Profile Avatar Debbie POTTER Sep 2025

Nice easy to listen to. I love this kind of backwards fairytale and we all love a bad boy. I love the twists and turns.

Profile Avatar Mette Stavid Droeger Sep 2025

I loved this book. It has a lot of humor

I decided to do a reread of the Assistant to the Villain series before diving into the third installment and I’m so happy that I did. This time I listened to it and I absolutely enjoyed the narrator, Em Eldridge.  Eldridge  portrays Evie and the Villain very well.  The tones and inflections are spot on and I wouldn’t want them done any other way.  I couldn’t stop laughing at the banter and seeing how it all went down was just great to listen to. It was like my first time reading this book.  The world building is easy and not overly complicated and it’s such a fun cozy mystery vibes in the best possible way. This one is a slow burn, but it’s so worth it.   I honestly couldn’t stop laughing and I think this is something I just needed. The ending though!! Oh it’s a good one!

I enjoyed this story: the courageous of the main female character mixed with the witticisms exchanged between she & her boss were enjoyable. The very slow romantic burn of their heightening relationship was prob. as slow as it should be, except for this impatient Gemini... Be forwarded, this book ends on a major cliffhanger, so make sure to acquire the 2nd book before you finish the first.

Profile Avatar James W. Apr 2025

I don’t mind the narration at all really. Super slow burn romance but really witty and fun!

Profile Avatar Anonymous Sep 2024

fantastic book.didn't like the narrator at the start but I think she fits thw character well so overall great.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jan 2024

The story was fine, but the narrator made this book unbearable. So labored, so overly articulated, so distracting. I will avoid this narrator at all costs.

Profile Avatar Alycia R. Nov 2023

DNF’d only because of the narrator. She dragged the words out. Even on 2x speed it wasn’t fast enough.

Profile Avatar Ginger L. Nov 2023

Cute story with likable characters. There were some gender tropes that reduced my enjoyment of the protagonist, but that’s of course very subjective. The narration made this book hard to get through. It was very slow and punctuated, like the way one might read a children’s book.

Profile Avatar Amanda W. Sep 2023

This is my favorite book of 2023 so far! So many emotions. I could stop from smiling, I laughed, I cried! The banter between the villain and Evie. The protectiveness of the villain. All my favorite tropes in one book. Will be recommending this book to everyone!
