Summary
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • GOOD MORNING AMERICA BOOK CLUB PICK • From the author of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Daisy Jones & The Six comes an epic new novel set against the backdrop of the 1980s space shuttle program about the extraordinary lengths we go to live and love beyond our limits.

“Thrilling . . . heartbreaking . . . uplifting . . . the fast-paced, emotionally charged story of one ambitious young woman, finding both her voice and her passion.”—Kristin Hannah, author of The Women

“NASA? Space missions? The ’80s? This is a collection of all the things I love.”—Andy Weir, author of Project Hail Mary and The Martian

A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: Time, NPR, People, Good Housekeeping, them, Marie Claire, Seattle Times, Book Riot, Library Journal, Chicago Public Library, She Reads, Denver Public Library

Joan Goodwin has been obsessed with the stars for as long as she can remember. Thoughtful and reserved, Joan is content with her life as a professor of physics and astronomy at Rice University and as aunt to her precocious niece, Frances. That is, until she comes across an advertisement seeking the first women scientists to join NASA’s space shuttle program. Suddenly, Joan burns to be one of the few people to go to space.

Selected from a pool of thousands of applicants in the summer of 1980, Joan begins training at Houston’s Johnson Space Center, alongside an exceptional group of fellow candidates: Top Gun pilot Hank Redmond and scientist John Griffin, who are kind and easygoing even when the stakes are highest; mission specialist Lydia Danes, who has worked too hard to play nice; warmhearted Donna Fitzgerald, who is navigating her own secrets; and Vanessa Ford, the magnetic and mysterious aeronautical engineer, who can fix any engine and fly any plane.

As the new astronauts become unlikely friends and prepare for their first flights, Joan finds a passion and a love she never imagined. In this new light, Joan begins to question everything she thinks she knows about her place in the observable universe.

Then, in December of 1984, on mission STS-LR9, it all changes in an instant.

Fast-paced, thrilling, and emotional, Atmosphere is Taylor Jenkins Reid at her best: transporting readers to iconic times and places, creating complex protagonists, and telling a passionate and soaring story about the transformative power of love—this time among the stars.

Let me just say that Barbara is TRASH . . . Now that I've gotten that off of my chest, I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of this and could not put it down. Imagine, being that smart and landing a job that incredible, and having the love of a child, and finding someone who loves you that fiercely! Absolutely incredible story. 5 stars

Profile Avatar Michelle C. Sep 2025

The narrator is FABULOUS!

A story about SO many kinds of love. A great read ️

One of the best books of the year! I love TJR she is one of my all time favorite authors. I have given every one of her books 5 stars.

Profile Avatar Natalie H. Jan 2026

Perfect story. I loved the characters (except Barbara) and I didn't want the book to end and lose them.

Profile Avatar Amy J. Sep 2025

At first I wasn't sure how I felt about this book because it started with some astronaut stuff and I didn't know if it would hold my interest. Boy was I wrong! I loved the way the story was told and I loved the narration. I connected with the main character loving her niece and thought that was such a special part of the book. But the love story really got me. Wow. Just read it!

Profile Avatar Tondaz Sep 2025

Such a wonderful description of falling in love with some one and how they become your whole world.

Profile Avatar Caitlin D. Jun 2026

Disappointing compared to her other works

Profile Avatar Danielle F. May 2026

Didn’t want the story end!

Profile Avatar Joanne D. May 2026

Kept me engaged. Good book.

Profile Avatar Judith C. May 2026

Sophomoric

Profile Avatar Brook F. May 2026

The story might have been good if I was not so irritated by the narration. The femal lowering her voice to be a male or a tough chick or raising it to be a child was TOO MUCH. It distracted from the story which I felt was moving slow to begin with. I am new to listening to books. The first one didn't do that- I am hoping these books are not like that

Profile Avatar Jim H. May 2026

I was hoping this book would be more of a historical narrative about the space shuttle mission, and the wonderful sacrifices and accomplishments made by the astronauts and engineers involved. Instead it’s more about the relationship between the 2 female leads. Groan. I couldn’t finish it.

Profile Avatar Amelia K. May 2026

I loved this book and found it very inspiring. if I hadn't had to go to work the next morning I would have stayed up all night to finish.

Profile Avatar Heather H. Apr 2026

Interesting read.

If I had been told that I would so enjoy a book about astronaut training, I would balk. But this was a book that I could not put down. The relationships, great and poor, between the characters are subtly and beautifully revealed. The tension to find out how this intricate story ends is sublime. Do yourself a favor and LISTEN!

Profile Avatar Amanda Mar 2026

It was well written and enjoyed it overall. Narrator’s voice was not my favourite by any means but I was determined to finish it.

Profile Avatar Allyse R. Mar 2026

Incredible and deeply romantic. Loved this book so much!

Profile Avatar Karen H. Feb 2026

Great love story. Have a good cry.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Feb 2026

A little boring. Female led was not believable as a scientist (I am one and know many). Never finished the book.

Profile Avatar Christina M. Jan 2026

This book changed me.

Profile Avatar Katie Jan 2026

Wonderful book with interesting characters. Narrator was excellent!

Profile Avatar Callie K. Jan 2026

I've read a few TJR books, and usually I love them. This one I went back and forth on, but ultimately settled on a 4.5-star rating, rounded up. The setting is told so well, and the characters are all decent people (except Lydia), and I really enjoyed the story itself. There is a lot of NASA stuff, and some astronomy stuff that people may say is wrong, but since I don't know any better, I enjoyed it. My biggest complaint is that the ending felt a little to abrupt for me. Overall, it's a good fiction book, and I'll certainly read more of her stuff.

Profile Avatar Mary F. Jan 2026

This was such an interesting book with all the astronaut information. It also had a great love story along with family and job difficulties.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Dec 2025

Amazing.

Profile Avatar Andrea S. Nov 2025

Great story with wonderful characters. Thoroughly enjoyed!

Profile Avatar Kristin W. Oct 2025

A trip through history & learning something new about the characters as they’re learning things about themselves. Listened for hours at a time-could not put down.

Profile Avatar Mzmogol Oct 2025

Great story and time piece!

Profile Avatar Marian C. Sep 2025

I loved this book… great story

Profile Avatar Judi Jeanotte Sep 2025

Wow. Very interesting depiction on woman breaking into the US space program. I often skip through the details of a story, more involved in the characters and their relationships. This book was different. I was fascinated by the details. Very well done. I don't want to give anything away but I think the author wanted to convey how far we've come at acceptance of love, the universe etc but unfortunately the politics of 2025 speak a reversal and it made me sad. The narration was good but again as in sooo many audiobooks there was the he said, she said where their were only to people in the scene This drives me crazy. Stop already!

Profile Avatar Field C. Aug 2025

Loved the book.

Profile Avatar Kristen N. Aug 2025

A good love story. Worth the read

Profile Avatar Anonymous Aug 2025

I am a big fan of Taylor Jenkins Reid and she did not disappoint with this book!

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jul 2025

This was a very good story. Captured the times and the difficulties LGBT individuals had in all aspects of their lives. It was also a wonderful love story on two fronts, love for partner and family member. Read this book, you will be happy you did.

Profile Avatar Lvanerian Jul 2025

Written well but very predictable

Profile Avatar Sim Jul 2025

Such a beautifully written story. So deep and complex, so hopeful and heartbreaking at the same time. I hope there are people out there like Joan and Vanessa. The narration was excellent.

Profile Avatar Lorie Jul 2025

It was OK. Not a topic that interested me. Did not appreciate the abrupt ending.

Profile Avatar Obdulia M. Jul 2025

I wish I can just express my feelings about this book as Goodwin communicated herself about everything. I didn’t know anything about the story and was very surprised again! I love the love that was portrayed and how easy was to understand it. Taylor Jenkins Reid continues being one of my favorite writers.

Profile Avatar Emily F. Jun 2025

One of the best books I have read in a long time. The way the author captured not only being a gay woman and motherhood, amazing! I love the narrator and her work and think this is some of her best.

Profile Avatar Kayla A. Jun 2025

Wow is all I can say

Profile Avatar Cheryl Jun 2025

Great read

Profile Avatar Carol M. Jun 2025

What an original plot. Totally kept my attention to see what happened next.

Profile Avatar Bronwyn C. Jun 2025

A great story and excellent narrator! Gripping from start to finish.

Profile Avatar Dan Jun 2025

This is another excellent novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid! I liked how the story is told going back and forth from current to past, which keeps one very motivated to continue. The Narrators are also awesome!

Profile Avatar Jen Vance Jun 2025

Have tissues for the end. It's a beautiful love story and it should be. It puts into perspective what astronauts and their families gave us for the United States and maybe around the world. Better than Carrie Soto.
