Una de las fechas más significativas durante el reinado de los Reyes Católicos fue la del 12 de Octubre de 1492: el día en que Cristóbal Colón descubrió América. El hecho de que Cristóbal Colón (que no era Español de origen) acudiera a una corte extranjera para ofrecer sus servicios prueba que el descubrimiento de América no fue en modo alguno accidental. Portugal y Castilla (España) estaban muy avanzados en la exploración de rutas mercantiles marítimas y Sevilla, una rica y populosa ciudad Española era por entonces un importante centro comercial.

One of the most significant dates during the reign of the Catholic kings was that of October 12th 1492: the day that Christopher Columbus discovered America. The fact that Christopher Columbus (who was not of Spanish origin) had come to a foreign court to offer his services proves that the discovery of America was not at all an accident. Portugal and Castile (Spain) were very advanced in the exploration of maritime mercantile routes, and Seville, a rich and populous Spanish city, was by then an important commercial center.
