The Awakening by Kate Chopin is a groundbreaking American novel of identity, freedom, desire, and the struggle against social convention. Set in Louisiana at the end of the nineteenth century, the story follows Edna Pontellier, a married woman and mother who begins to question the expectations that have defined her life. What begins as a quiet emotional awakening soon becomes a powerful search for independence and selfhood.

As Edna explores art, love, sexuality, and personal freedom, she increasingly resists the rigid roles imposed upon women by marriage and society. Chopin’s elegant, psychologically perceptive writing examines the conflict between individual desire and social responsibility with remarkable honesty. Controversial when first published in 1899, the novel is now recognized as a major work of American literature and an important early exploration of women’s autonomy.

Narrated by Geoffrey Giuliano and The Rebellion, this production brings Chopin’s intimate and emotionally complex novel vividly to life. Giuliano’s distinctive theatrical narration captures the beauty, tension, longing, and tragedy of Edna’s journey, offering modern listeners a compelling encounter with a classic that remains strikingly relevant today.
