Unabridged Audiobook
Narration is top notch. The plot and story has heroism and just a chilling reminder that we may not be alone. The background sounds while narration is going on it wicked, only other series I know that has it is the Alien series on audible. Makes listening a greater experience! Only issue is the music at the end/start if each new part, but if you just press the 30s forward it skips it so no biggie. I'm pretty sure the music is also the original music L. Ron Hubbard composed himself for the novel. But not sure.
The book was great. the narration great. could have done without the music between chapters, like commercials during a movie....irratating
Don't let the awful movie interpretation ruin it. The story starts at 30:22, fyi the rest is all introduction. It's quite a good story written before every story became a trilogy as I could see this being broken up that way.
Took a while to get into the book. Different style of science fiction. Stuck with it. Good ending. Narrator was good. Had to really listen to hear voice over the background music and sounds.
Great book and the narrator was fantastic.
Excellent listen. The voice actors and sound effects were a brilliant touch. I wager a labor of love for the genre. Well done.
Definitely one of the best books I’ve ever read/audiobook. Can not say enough great things about it .
Ohhh how I hated to love this book after the introduction. I'm sure written down it would be easier to forgive, but read aloud the proud ego of the writter did not make me warm to him. Perhaps I judge out of period and out of cultural context. However, talent doesn't necessarily require a likable personality and there's no doubting the writters talent as a story teller. I enjoyed it from start to end and so long did I listen to it that I missed that world from my life after it ended. It reminded me of 'The count of Monte Cristo' I highly suspect if you enjoyed one, you'll like the other.
My All Time Favorite Book
I loved the production of this. It was like an old “Radio Show” with voice acting, sound effects, music, etc. A lot of time and effort went into to making and recording this. It was extremely entertaining to listen to! I highly recommend it
Everything was great just the music between chapters could’ve done without
I saw so many great reviews on the book, so I figured why not. 1. It's an old audio. 2. I don't know what book they are reviewing. It wasn't my cup of tea. And I love sci-fi.
Excellent narration, voice actors, and sound effects. The story is good but goes on and on. It reads like a morality tale, with the alien monsters representing the worst of humanity.
Good book way worth the reading. The person reading the book keeps me wanting to keep coming back to it. Good clean book for younger if someone cares. As for the 4 star is just not something I normally would have Listen to. I started to Because of the hours Because of the hours.
This was a great book. I definitely recommend it. However the last 30 hrs or so is just a repeat of the last so many hrs of the book. I was satisfied and let down at the same time.
Crazy long book
Plot and story is great. But the crazy sound effects, music etc. Ruins the experience. I'd rather have it as a normal audiobook...
A bit long, confusing when it started over again at chapter 12. Decided not to continue and call it finished. Everything says it’s done at 45 minutes. So I don’t know why it repeats itself for another 30 or so. Error? Alternate ending? It didn’t say.
good stuff
The narration of this book is how all books should be done, multiple actors with a few sound effects. Not sure why they had the lengthy introduction of the author but nevertheless great book, so much better than the movie. However I do understand why the movie went in the direction it did. The story in the book would have been way to long and way too complicated to make into a movie.
First, the book is shown to be 77 hours long but with 31.5 hours remaining, it actually ends so there is a glitch in the audio length. That still makes it an impressively long book. Amazing acting with a full cast is of characters and special effects. 5-star performance. It actually seems like several stories tied in a series. I’m not a sci-fi fan but this was well worth the listen. No spoiler alerts from me. Just plug in and go for a long ride with Johnny Good Boy Tyler.
excellent book and well worth the time. the mix is a little off and irritating at times but doesn't ruin the experience. it's very well produced although it seems to replay from chapter 12 after the final closings from the narrator.
Is one of my favorite books I’ve listened to. The narration is done really well
Excellent- real fun and drama. The different voice overs added a realism not normally found in such narratives. The music in between was slightly OTT but not really an issue. What remained a mystery was how the download was 76hrs of listening but the actual length of the full book was only about 36hrs….i was a little disappointed when it finished after 36hrs.
This is so much better than the movie! The detail and all the actors voices. They compiled multiple books in this and it Awesome! I actually listened to this 3 times!
Although it was better than I expected, Battlefield Earth was a bit like watching an 80s made for TV movie - not necessarily a bad thing - though it was unreasonably long. It was entertaining, well thought out in most of its concepts, and the main character is just human enough to recognize as, well, human. The protagonist is, nonetheless, pretty paper-thin, and sort of serves the plot more than the plot serves him. You never really get the full sense of what makes Johnny Goodboy Tyler unique, except that he does very main-charactery stuff whenever the plot demands him to. What's his flaw? What's he trying to reconcile within himself that's at odds with the new world he encounters? [potential spoilers removed] I can't remember it all, because the book is 45 hours long. I lost interest, regained it, lost it, regained it... Anyway, after 2 months, here I am. I liked it, enjoyed it, didn't know it had anything to do with Scientology, and, well, would probably recommend it to anyone needing a good, long, somewhat goofy, yet exciting, and boring, and complicated, powerhouse of a sci-fi story to listen to.
This is a very interesting book, 100% recommend it. Only thing I could falt this narration is the music was a little too loud
The story was amazing. Well worth the listen.
Narrator did a great job but this desperately needed an editor. Long winded and often boring, the authors hate of science and thinking of himself as the hero is not subtle.
I pushed on through, despite the overhanging shadow of gender bias - trying to enjoy the story despite female characters being relegated to fearful hapless victims, or to cook for the men.
Loved it! Well done.
It wasn’t too bad, got a little long
This book is terrible. Stone-age man defeats the most powerful aliens in the 16 universes? Too many plot holes to go into, but they are glossed over with a hand-wave, or a lucky coincidence. All unknowable information was “read in an ancient man-book” or a in a conveniently found manual. (Never mind the 100percent recall, and the unlikely reading of the “just so happened to need this info” info) The ridiculously absurd dialogue, the idiotic plans, and the absurdly obvious counters to the idiotic plans are all bad enough… but then the author makes the lazy, lazy sin of making the antagonists into Nazis? Not Nazi-like bad-guys, but actual Hitlerite Nazi-Nazis. LAZY. This book is about 20 hours too long. The back third is full of stupid planetary administration, unnecessary alien bs, inter-galactic law and economics, then a treaty conference where all parties are forced into said treaty by threat of death and extinction, then mollified with bribes, fraud, and racketeering. The female character somehow transforms from a strong-headed defiant woman who’ll stop at nothing to save her man, into a doe-eyed, ditzy, materialistic, submissive, damsel in distress, with no depth or autonomy. It’s disgraceful, and gross. I hated this book and would never recommend it to anyone.
Enjoying book, just over the music between chapters
This is a great book, I highly recommend this book. A million times better than the movie.
Picked up the hardback back in the 90s & loved it ever since. Audiobook is even better.
Best book ever
So amazing. So many great voices. Very rare to find such an incredibly well produced and thorough radio play like this. Truly theater of the mind. 48 hrs but easily well worth it. I've never been a fan of Hubbard because of scientology but I heard such good things about this book and particularly the auudiobook. After listening to it I see why the movie was such a travesty. Now I only hope it gets picked up by HBO or something. If you love scifi, this is a MUST LISTEN. I already feel like I am going to listen to it a second time.
AS I REVISIT THIS ELEMENTAL WORK FROM MY YOUTH (PUBLISHED 1982) I ENJOY MOST OF THE SPECIAL EFFECTS AND HAVE NOT ALLOWED THE CULTURAL SHADOW OF SCIENTOLOGY TARNISH MY ENJOYMENT OF THE STRAIGHT FORWARD, OFTEN STEREOTYPICAL, BUT ENERGETIC AND COMMITTED SCI-FI OF MR. HUBBARD. WHAT UP DRAGSTER!
I cant count how many times i do have lisen too this book. I like the story, voice actores and the efect put on it.
Oh I love the narrator love the fact that they did thing different characters in different voices what I found to be extremely irritating and time wasting was the music in between chapters it was like a commercial please no more of that
One of the best Sci Fi books ever written. Has everything. Audio book great.
THE AUTHOR, THE BOOK & THE AUDIO PRODUCTION. Despite the infamous reputation of L. Ron Hubbard or how one feels about the individual himself and the practices he may have participated in, this is beyond doubt his greatest science fiction master piece. Unique and killfully written, this action packed and fast moving narrative will keep the listener transfixed as they might ponder; what happens next? Battlefield Earth has all the elements that's make it a certain classic in the Sci-Fi genre, it contains nearly every kind of subgenre that one can think of that fits into the narrative seamlessly. I cannot recommend this book highly enough to any Sci-fi fan, I am pretty confident that the majority of people will enjoy this edition. The production quality of this audio book is quite high, the sound effects are good and the narrator's voice is both skillfully expressive and emotive, the use of female voices at the appropriate parts are a nice touch. If I had any criticism at all, it is with the character voices of the Psychlo adversary's, I felt they sounded a little too alike, at times making it difficult to determine what was being said by whom. It must be stated though that I also felt that it did not interfere with my enjoyment of the production. THE STORYLINE. This voluminous book is set in a post apocalyptic Earth, where an evil race called the PSYCHLO had decimated Earth' s military and population in just 9 minutes, with the use of invincible gas drones. Johnny " Good Boy" Tyler, one of the few precious survivors left generations after the attack, is captured by a Psychlo called TERL, the chief security officer of the mining corporation tasked with stripping the Earth of its precious minerals. Terl has plans to use some of the remaining humans upon the Earth to mine the last remaining gold deposit on the planet so as to buy his way to power back on his home world. The gold is situated in the radioactive mountains of North America, in which radioactivity remains, this is deadly to all Psychlo's and becomes extremely explosive when tiny amounts mix with Psychlo's breath gas. Terl intends to use an advanced brain educator machine to train Johnny to operate and repair the Psycho equipment, so that he could then train other human captives to help him mine the gold for the greedy and devious Psychlo. Johnny learns much more about Psychlo's and their technology than Terl realizes and as a result, he determines to rid the Earth of Psychlo's forever. In a battle of wit's between captor and captive, Johnny sets off to complete a complex plan, with the aid of other groups of survivors around the world, to not only destroy all Psychclo's, but they also end up having to also fight a evil and deadly mercenary force called The BRIGANDS, who for generations had been working for the invaders and capturing humans to be tortured by the bored Psychlo, as a twisted form of sport. Subsequently, Johnny has to rush against the clock to ensure the Earths survival against a gas drone launched by Terl to exterminate the last remaining humans on Earth. He also has to fend off multiple alien war fleets surrounding the planet. They are greedily intent on ransacking Earth's riches, enslaving its population and finally, ensure the planet's destruction. Johnny struggles desperately to find solutions to all of these problems, as everything and everyone he holds dear hangs in the balance between survival and annihilation. Then, without warning, a new adversary, more powerful than the universally hated Psychclo dictatorship shows up. Time is running out ever too quickly now, while Johnny and his friends myst face a dangerous and hideous monster that is intent upon dividing up the remains of Planet Earth to the highest bidder. The INTERGALACTIC BANK, and they are foreclosing on the Psychlo property called Earth!
I loved it
I loved this book. It kept me on the edge of my seat and I was so addicted to what was going to happen next. I felt like I was right there. I'm a truck driver so this makes my day go by so fast.
This is the best audio book I have listened to. Background sounds and different voices for the many characters are great. Listening to the same voice for a whole book gets boring. I found myself stopping and parking just to hear the next chapter. Great job on this rather large book keeping interest and anticipation throughout. I look forward to more books like this and thank you for getting my interest into reading again. Audiobooks is great for me as my sight is failing.
A truly entertaining story with lively and thrilling narrators and a great plot development. One of the best audiobooks I've listened to.
