Summary
A realistic and emotional look at a woman who falls into the grips of insanity written by the iconic American writer Sylvia Plath

“It is this perfectly wrought prose and the freshness of Plath’s voice in The Bell Jar that make this book enduring in its appeal.” — USA Today

The Bell Jar chronicles the crack-up of Esther Greenwood: brilliant, beautiful, enormously talented, and successful, but slowly going under—maybe for the last time. Sylvia Plath masterfully draws the reader into Esther’s breakdown with such intensity that Esther’s neuroses become completely real and even rational, as probable and accessible an experience as going to the movies. Such deep penetration into the dark and harrowing corners of the psyche is an extraordinary accomplishment and has made The Bell Jar a haunting American classic.

I read this book many moon ago and this is my first audiobook from start to finish. The book itself is a sincere depiction of a young woman as her mind unravels. Esther Greenwood tries to make sense of herself and the world around her. The subject is timeless, yet the book has a strong sense of time and place. Maggie Gyllenhaal's narration is phenomenal. She gives an authentic voice to Esther. She injects feeling and heighten the emotional connection between the reader/listener and the narrator/author.

This was my first audio book from start to end, and it was phenomenal. Maggie does a terrific job narrating and the writing is incredibly poignant. Very sad subject matter, but the way in which she describes some of the emotions the character experiences is very relatable.

I really enjoyed the book. Sometimes I would start stop paying attention due to my own thoughts and it didn't keep my attention. The narrator did a great job expressing the emotions and talked very clearly. Would listen to her again
