Summary
A four-year-old Mi’kmaq girl goes missing from the blueberry fields of Maine, sparking a tragic mystery that haunts the survivors, unravels a family, and remains unsolved for nearly fifty years

July 1962. Following in the tradition of Indigenous workers from Nova Scotia, a Mi’kmaq family arrives in Maine to pick blueberries for the summer. Weeks later, four-year-old Ruthie, the family’s youngest child, vanishes. She is last seen by her six-year-old brother, Joe, sitting on a favorite rock at the edge
of a berry field. Joe will remain distraught by his sister’s disappearance for years to come.

In Maine, a young girl named Norma grows up as the only child of an affluent family. Her father is emotionally distant, her mother frustratingly overprotective.

Norma is often troubled by recurring dreams and visions that seem more like memories than imagination. As she grows older, Norma slowly comes to realize there is something her parents aren’t telling her. Unwilling to abandon her intuition, she will spend decades trying to uncover this family secret.

For readers of The Vanishing Half and Woman of Light, this showstopping debut by a vibrant new voice in fiction is a riveting novel about the search for truth, the shadow of trauma, and the persistence of love across time.

This was such a good story. I did not realize all the things that happened in the 70”s . The young girl in the book had such courage . Family means everything. Never giving up on hope.

This was a book club pick and I wasn’t sure if I’d like it but I did really enjoy it. Some parts were a bit slow but it’s great story telling and the narrators were soothing to listen to.

Fantastic, well written, great story, perfect narration. I really loved this story, heart breaking but redemptive. I will read this again.

The story was somewhat predictable and the characters were not believable in my opinion. Joe didn't make sense all of his running and escape after making clear their family was so tight. Didn't jive. Also Norma did not pursue anything? Knowing the mom had kept the secret folder and all of the pictures? Could have been told better. But the location and descriptions were interesting.

Really enjoyed this book

Hated it. I thought it was HORRIBLE that her self-centered "mother" abducted her from her real family for over 5 decades and no one who knew of it reported it when it happened. And Norma/Ruthie was not angry of the time she lost from her real family? Joe is also self-centered. I could not relate to these characters or the book. Could not wait for the book to be done.

This novel has received a lot of good reviews in many published book reviews but I do not understand why and this recording did not help. Both characters in the story are miserable most of the time. It is a novel of chronic complaint. If one likes downers, go for it. In addition, the story is told from two people's point of view and two narrators are used - a good idea, except that the female, who is supposed to be in her 50s sounds like she is 17, and the male narrator sounds as though he is speaking from behind his hand - like he does not want to be heard. True, the male is not in a good place but the constant "out of the side of his mouth" sounding narration was really, really annoying. Recorded Books is one of the original audiobook producers and their recordings are usually a lot more professional than this one.

I liked this book a lot and think it would be an important read for anyone in any way connected to adoption.

Hard to follow, and very unrealistic

I feel like it had a great story, but was told in a verrrrry long-winded way. The chronology was also very confusing in the beginning and took a moment to figure out the narrators were speaking in the past tense and present tense.

I was really looking forward to listening to this book. Plot line sounded compelling but it dragged on. The female narrator’s voice was very monotoned.
