Summary
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • THE BLOCKBUSTER JACK REACHER SERIES THAT INSPIRED TWO MAJOR MOTION PICTURES AND THE STREAMING SERIES REACHER

Digging graves had not been part of my plans when I woke up that morning.

Reacher goes where he wants, when he wants. That morning he was heading west, walking under the merciless desert sun—until he comes upon a curious scene. A Jeep has crashed into the only tree for miles around. A woman is slumped over the wheel.

Dead? No, nothing is what it seems.

The woman is Michaela Fenton, an army veteran turned FBI agent trying to find her twin brother, who might be mixed up with some dangerous people. Most of them would rather die than betray their terrifying leader, who has burrowed his influence deep into the nearby border town, a backwater that has seen better days. The mysterious Dendoncker rules from the shadows, out of sight and under the radar, keeping his dealings in the dark.

He would know the fate of Fenton’s brother.

Reacher is good at finding people who don’t want to be found, so he offers to help, despite feeling that Fenton is keeping secrets of her own. But a life hangs in the balance. Maybe more than one. But to bring Dendoncker down will be the riskiest job of Reacher's life. Failure is not an option, because in this kind of game, the loser is always better off dead.

I’m a Reacher fan for many years and have noticed a decline in the cohesiveness of Reacher character portrayal over the last few releases. This definitely isn’t the Jack Reacher I grew to love. The audio version presentation does not fit the character at all in my opinion. This plot was disjointed and not believable and also lacked the human element so endearing about Reacher. Disappointed- very disappointed. Perhaps Reacher needs to retire. These last few books lack author passion. So sorry…Judy L in Dallas

great book I love the Reacher character...of course I'm still a little dejected after the loss of Dick Hill...regardless Reachers edge seems to be weining possibly due to his age I'm assuming...still all in all an entertaining read

Better Off Dead pulls the reader in from the start. Jack Reacher is by definition a larger than life character in many ways. If you’ve never read a Jack Reacher book, no problem. These books are all individually good. This one is great. The authors jump right into the plot. I was taken back when I started Better Off Dead. Jack Reacher is walking along as Jack does all the time. He comes across a car accident. Jack is a nice guy so of course he stops. He should have kept walking but then there would be no novel. Read this one.

Good book and narration.

I’m afraid Andrew Child has lost the inherent narrative in the Reacher novels. I’ve listened to all of them and, in addition to lacking the creative and seamless flow, switching to Scott Brick, whose narration is as monotonal as it gets, renders this novel DOA.

It AIN’T Reacher. He’s not the same guy with the new helper author. Weak story but doesn’t fill in the holes. Doesn’t take out all the trash. And finally let’s the master villain walk off into the sun. I’m done. Guess all good things must end.

The long saga of Reacher's exploits has always been an enjoyable experience. However, I can't honestly say this chapter meets the same levels of excitement and enjoyment I've received from many of the other adventures. I was truly excited to listen to Better Off Dead, but before the story picked up steam, it was over... And, that was a bit of a disappointment. When you add in the monotonous drone of the narrator, I was left wanting much more. What the hell happened to the voice of Reacher as told by Dick Hill? Pay the man and get him back!!

In keeping with the writing, this too was an excellent read. I so enjoy this character, and the adventures he encounters. He needs to find love.

Read all lee child’s books, last couple not good at all. Sold his soul when he let Tom cruise play reacher. I think Andrew should find another line of work.

I've read all of the series, listened to most of them too. I've seen this coming for a while. The series is played out and bringing in a different author didn't help. in fact it ruined it for me. This guy in this book is not Jack reacher. I've come to know and love reacher, and this is a joke. Reacher doesn't punch people in the arms aiming for the nerves he kicks them in the balls and head butts them. I will not be reading anymore of this poo-poo
