Unabridged Audiobook
Absolutely outstanding! From the heart racing scenes of battle, to the stomach churning, spine tingling horror, and finishing with the tear jerking end of the redemption arc, it’s a great story and a wild ride with no lulls along the way. Definitely recommend!
Riveting, thoroughly enjoyable. The author is especially good at choreographing scenes so that even the most chaotic parts are still vivid and understandable. The imagery is superb, and the characters and their arcs felt real and exciting. Never once did I know what was going to happen next, but neither did I feel lost. Overall. I highly recommend this book to fans of horror and medieval historical fantasy. The narrator did the job, but often made questionable choices with more than a few characters. For instance, he gives Delphine, a vibrant young girl with plenty to say, a high, wispy voice with little range. Another character, a villain who is in a gay relationship, is specifically pointed out in the text as NOT having a "gay" accent, while his lover, who is more morally complex, does have one. However, the narrator gives the former character a typical simpering evil "gay" accent, while the latter has a more stereotypically "normal" accent. Maybe says something about what kind of voice the narrator considers "villainous"! Overall, I think I would've preferred to read this as a physical book than listen to this particular narrator.
Great book!
Gripping story and wonderful narration. I could not stop listening!
Hieronymus Bosch meets Seventh Seal. The characters and plot were equally engaging. I enjoyed the narrator, who excelled at most of the character voices and at capturing the dark tone of the book. My only complaint was how he voiced the girl's character. Since she is so prominent in the story, this was almost enough to take me out of it and I found myself cringing any time her dialogue came up. The narrator is undeniably good, but he does what a lot of narrators do when voicing someone of a different gender, especially a child, and that is to verge on caricature. It's squeaky and annoying, and while that might seem like a minor complaint, the girl had enough page time that it really started to grate and take me out of an otherwise great performance and story.
It wasn't what I was expecting but I enjoyed it, kept me wanting to know more and I anticipated my listening time. That said I was disappointed in the ending. Maybe I expected too much.
