From one of the hottest stand-up comedians, Nate Bargatze brings his everyman comedy to the page in this hilarious collection of personal stories, opinions, and confessions.

Nate Bargatze used to be a genius. That is, until the summer after seventh grade when he slipped, fell off a cliff, hit his head on a rock, and “my skull got, like, dented or something.” Before this accident, he dreamed of being “an electric engineer, or a doctor that does brain stuff, or a math teacher who teaches the hardest math on earth.” Afterwards, all he could do was stand-up comedy.* But the “brain stuff” industry’s loss is everyone else’s gain because Nate went on to become one of today’s top-grossing comedians, breaking both attendance and streaming records.

In his highly anticipated first book, Nate talks about life as a non-genius. From stories about his first car (named Old Blue, a clunky Mazda with a tennis ball stick shift) and his travels as a Southerner (Northerners like to ask if he believes in dinosaurs), to tales of his first apartment where he was almost devoured by rats and his many debates with his wife over his chores, his diet, and even his definition of “shopping.” He also reflects on such heady topics as his irrational passion for Vandy football and the mysterious origins of sushi (how can a California roll come from old-time Japan?).

Big Dumb Eyes is full of heart. It will make readers laugh out loud and nod in recognition, but it probably won’t make them think too much. *Nate’s family disputes this entire story.

I love Nate Bargatze in his comedy specials but I was disappointed in this book.

Every part of this was perfect!

Couldn’t get interested in the book. His jokes are better in his act rather than being read by him

It's okay. Maybe I'm too old.

I could listen to Nate Bargatze read a telephone book and he could still make me laugh

I love his standup, but something is missing in the audiobook. His delivery in the first 30 minutes or so is a little stilted - like he's finding his pace. I don't know why they didn't go back and re-record it as he got more comfortable. But also - I think his mannerisms and those subtle visual cues with his face and eyes are part of his comedy, and without them, the book just kind of falls flat for me. It was a real chore to get through it and it was only 7 hours.

Loved it. Been following Nate for about 10 years. Much prefer hearing him narrate than imagine him as I read it.

Loved! Entertaining well told stories told by Nate. Definitely would have rather listened to it than read it so you get all Nate’s personality and isms that you would miss if reading. Couldn’t access the pdf he references tho.

A wonderful listen, read by Nate himself and written just as he speaks. I’ve been anticipating this book and am not disappointed. Nate shares stories of his life and family in a way that feels authentic, as if it’s a conversation. I enjoy his comedy, his podcast, and now his book. Well done, Nate!
