Summary
An LAPD homicide detective must choose between justice and vengeance as he teams up with the FBI in the first novel of the 'thrilling' Harry Bosch series (New York Times Book Review).

For maverick LAPD homicide detective Harry Bosch, the body in the drainpipe at Mulholland Dam is more than another anonymous statistic. This one is personal . . . because the murdered man was a fellow Vietnam 'tunnel rat' who had fought side by side with him in a hellish underground war. Now Bosch is about to relive the horror of Nam. From a dangerous maze of blind alleys to a daring criminal heist beneath the city, his survival instincts will once again be tested to their limit. Pitted against enemies inside his own department and forced to make the agonizing choice between justice and vengeance, Bosch goes on the hunt for a killer whose true face will shock him.

Another great Harry Bosch book. Always enjoy listening to one of these books. Michael Connelly keeps you on the edge of the seat and never quite know what the twist at the end will be. Can only look forward to the next book.

I've listened to Det. Harry Bosch for about 5 books now. Try to listen in order because then you won't be able to tell what happens to who. I read newer Bosch books before I went back to this classic. Still, it's a great story. The reader is excellent.

A very good tale told just right. Keeping the listener guessing and hanging on right until the end. The narrator does an excellent job of getting the tension just right. Highly recommend.

I got hooked on the story but the writing is average, IMHO.

I was disappointed with the ending of the book… when all is finally revealed, it just seemed a little too far fetched just too much of a reach.

So incredibly boring. I was very disappointed in both the story and the narrator.

Great book. I watched the TV series and have read over thirteen of the books as well. Solid fan. This book sets the foundation for so many of the things that follow. Wish I had read this book first. It gave me the answers that are only in this book. Loved it!

I love the Bosch series. The narrator really makes the books come alive with the different voices and he really acts out each character. I am making my way through the whole series now and I have been watching the tv series too.

if you are a Harry Bosch fan you can't miss with, "Black Echo". Iv'e read them all more than once and this is a terrific investigation with a great cast for the Nam Vet who seems to be in way over his head. Yet Bosch pieces together this complicated yarn that keeps surprising and fascinates with each chapter. Enjoy, this is Bosch at his best. Jimy Jet

The best detective story I have heard. The twist at the end was of not a surprise after the way it was going. Matching all of the facts leading up to the conclusion is a masterful work. I really recommend it.

Worst Harry Bosch yet...it just wasn't that interesting. A total disappointment when compared to the other books by Michael Connely.

Love everything Michael Connelly writes. But Harry Bosch is definitely my favourite character. Excellent book.

The abridgment makes this otherwise entertaining story predictable.
