Summary
Catherine “Cat” Ferry is a forensic odontologist, a specialist in bite marks and the clues they provide. But while Cat’s colleagues know her as a world-class scientist, she secretly attempts to manage her fragile psyche with alcohol, delving into the minds of rapists and murderers yet never allowing her own frightening past to creep into the foreground.

Cat’s latest case involves a disturbing murder in New Orleans. Banishing her personal demons, she focuses on the potential killer, until one morning she’s paralyzed by a panic attack at a grisly murder scene. Praying the attack is a onetime event, she continues her job as a consultant to the New Orleans Police Department, but when another victim dies in the same shocking way—raising fears that a serial killer is at large—Cat blacks out over the victim’s mutilated corpse.

Suspended from the FBI task force, plagued by nightmares, and at odds with her married lover—a homicide detective—Cat finally reaches her breaking point. In a desperate effort to regain control over a life spiraling out of control, Cat retreats to her hometown of Natchez, Mississippi. But her family’s secluded antebellum estate provides no sanctuary.

When some of Cat’s forensic chemicals are spilled in her childhood bedroom, two bloody footprints are revealed. This sight shocks her more than any corpse she has seen in her career. Cat’s father was murdered when she was eight years old, but she always believed the crime occurred in the garden outside their home. The bloody footprints suggest otherwise.

Driven by this fragment of her past, Cat attempts a forensic reconstruction of the decades-old crime, even as developments with the New Orleans task force pull her back into the case she left behind. Plagued by troubling nightmares, Cat pieces together the horrifying events she has been shielded from all her life. Soon, both she and the FBI realize that the murders occurring now in New Orleans are intimately bound up with Cat’s family and her past.

Can Cat trust her own memories? Or has the truth been so distorted that she can never know her family’s real history? Finding a solution to these intertwined murders means more than stopping a remorseless killer—it may be the only way to save Cat Ferry’s sanity...and her life.

Greg Iles is a masterful storyteller. In this dramatic novel of suspense he deftly probes the relationship between good and evil, and the unique power of human memory to reconstruct—or completely reinvent—the past.

The reader is awful. Has she ever been in the south? The story is great but it is all I can do to listen to this fake southern accent. Please don't even try

I couldn't get past the 4th CD on this book. The main characters voice was annoying and she was too self-involved to the point where I didn't care at all about her.

Bravo. This was a wonderful book. I could not wait to begin my daily commute to work and I hated getting out of the car to go to work. I was in suspense the entire time and I fell in love with the characters. My family is from Louisiana and I felt like I took trip to visit my Tati. Great job.

The author's work was reccommended to me by a friend and this was the first of his books I rented. I was disappointed. I felt the story dragged. There were parts was I was literally fast forwarding cause it was just too slow. I agree with another reviewer in that the main character was very annoying and unbelievable. I have other books in my queue by this author and hope they prove to be better.

I've read some of Greg Iles more recent works and I truly enjoyed those novels. I was extremely disappointed in this book. The main character is annoying and unbelievable. The topic, sexual abuse is a serious matter but it is not handled well in this book. It feels as if someone is beating you over the head with it throughout the novel. I agree with another reviewer that this book was in need of some major editing that did not take place. I enjoy Iles' work but I suggest you skip this one.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, the characters, storyline and length. Isles has the ability to keep you interested through the whole thing.

Although this book started slowly with a main character that was initially hard to like, Greg Iles' talent as an author slowly turns her into someone you begin to understand and root for. The plot and character development leave you very captivated while the delicate topic of incest and child sexual abuse is handled expertly, without pulling any punches. We've already recommended this book to friends who like a good, well-developed story.

I listen on my way to and from work. I hated to get out of the car. Excellent narrator.

The story was a bit boring and the characters not very appealing. I sent it back before finishing.

I am fond of the author and this is typical of his style. I didn't like having to wait for the second 8 discs. It made a long book even longer

Wonderful book and I loved the Sheriff Joanna Brady character. However, in the last chapters I expected more detail as was done throughout the book. Was a slight letdown but still a very good book.

This was a long book and one that dealt with a tough subject matter, incest. If that isn't your cup of tea I would avoid it, because it is pretty intense in this area. I enjoyed this book but thought it was a bit too long. Joyce Bean does a good narrating and this book is written from one of the victim's perspectives. It is set in Louisiana but I don't think that makes a big difference because incest can happen in any part of the country.

As the book started I thought oh no not another vampire book - but then it unraveled into a chilling mystery about the most wicked topic. I'm sure it was difficult to write because at time it was difficult to listen to for the shocking truths of this particular violence. However the ending left something to be desired which is why it only got a 4 from me.

I've enjoyed several of Greg Iles' books, particularly the informative one about Nazi Germany, but this one was too long for its plot. The plot is good, however, as is the main character; it's just disappointing after 10 hours or so.

I am currently about 1/4 into the book. The story is very interesting, but the reader's version of a Southern accent is odd. Having spent a significant amount of time in the Southern US, I cannot say that accent really sounds Southern. It sounds like someone from the East trying to sound Southern or something. I recommend the book for its story, however.

Absolutely wonderful. Good plot, good subplot and good characters. This author really knows how to tell a story.

I was really put off by the southern accent and I am a life-long Southerner. I am also a speech therapist who was taught that speech should not call more attention to itself than content. I got used to it, and some of it was interesting. I almost sent it back after one disc.

Reading was excellent as was the story. Even though the book was long it moved along nicely. Unlike many stories I did not feel that it should be two discs shorter.

This is a deep psychological journey into a terrible and emotional subject. I really enjoyed the compelling story, although the plot seemed to take some implausible jumps between seemingly unrelated storylines. Also , a few ends were left loose. But, in general, I thought it was very good. Definitely recommended.

Too wordy. Too many boring unnecessary descriptions. I would recommend it only to someone with great patience or perhaps a long commute or many boring airplace flights. I can't believe I finished it. I suppose I had a love/hate relationship with the book -- It was a great suspenseful story but just tooooo looooong. I can't believe an editor was involved in the process of reviewing the proofs of this book or perhaps the writer refused the editor's advice.

I really liked this book. I was a little worried that it would stay interesting for 16 discs but it did. Some interesting twists and turns as the story develops. This is my first Iles book and I am ready for more.

I am a huge fan of this author and looked forward to this book. After listening to the first four or five discs I remained totally disappointed. I had considered Iles up there with Grisham and Baldaci, but this one is not even close to his other works. Long, drawn out, slow paced with people I cared nothing about. If you think crime writer Ann Rule drags things out; she's a roller coaster compared to this work.

This certainly kept my attention. Although I was able to figure out "who done it" relatively early on, there are some plot twists that were surprises, right up to the last tracks. Good audio delivery, too.
