Blood Work

Unabridged Audiobook

Written By: Michael Connelly

Narrated By: Dick Hill

Publisher: Brilliance Audio

Date: September 2004

Duration: 12 hours 41 minutes

Thanks to a heart transplant, former FBI agent Terrell McCaleb is enjoying a quiet retirement, renovating the fishing boat he lives on in Los Angeles Harbor. But McCaleb''s calm seas turn choppy when a story in the "What Happened To?" column of the LA Times brings him face-to-face with the sister of the woman whose heart now beats in his chest. From her, McCaleb learns a terrible truth: that the donor of his heart was not killed in an accident, as he''d been told, but was murdered.

Wracked with guilt over the fact that he''s alive because another human being was killed, McCaleb embarks on a private investigation of his donor''s murder-a crime as horrific as anything he ever encountered as a serial killer investigator for the FBI.

This is a methodical story. In some places it is even laborious, but if you stick with it, it is worth it. Having now gone through the unabridged version of the written piece, I think I'd like to see this movie. I am an Eastwood fan, so maybe it would work for me? Narrator was pretty good too!

I know that I'm not supposed to read a book based solely on the curiosity of a movie, but I did it. I actually bought the Unabridged version and forgot about it, but the book took so long for anything to happen. Harry Bosch novels are great because you know that he is going to come out on top but Terry just dragged everything out. Then I was disappointing with the results. Wasn't, from reading the Harry Bosch series and Scarecrow, a good one for Michael Connelly.

I think I would have enjoyed the unabridged version better. Since I saw the movie I did not enjoy it like I thought I would. Usually the book has a lot more to offer then the movie in this case they were pretty close to the same. I did enjoy the movie. If I had not seen the movie I would have enjoyed the book more.

As I had hoped for, the book was a nice mystery with twists and turns at each chapter. Though it was not a book I "couldn't put down" was the entertainment I had rented it for. The story was well thought out and definitely intriguing.
