Summary
AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR BY THE WASHINGTON POST • LONGLISTED FOR THE PEN E.O. WILSON LITERARY SCIENCE WRITING AWARD

'Glorious. . .You will marvel at the brilliance and vast weirdness of your design.' —The Washington Post

Bill Bryson, bestselling author of A Short History of Nearly Everything, takes us on a head-to-toe tour of the marvel that is the human body. As addictive as it is comprehensive, this is Bryson at his very best, a must-read owner's manual for everybody.

Bill Bryson once again proves himself to be an incomparable companion as he guides us through the human body--how it functions, its remarkable ability to heal itself, and (unfortunately) the ways it can fail. Full of extraordinary facts (your body made a million red blood cells since you started reading this) and irresistible Bryson-esque anecdotes, The Body will lead you to a deeper understanding of the miracle that is life in general and you in particular. As Bill Bryson writes, 'We pass our existence within this wobble of flesh and yet take it almost entirely for granted.' The Body will cure that indifference with generous doses of wondrous, compulsively readable facts and information.

I don't listen to a lot of books, and I don't read a lot of books, but I cannot believe how unbelievably great this book is. It is literally unreal I'm not going to tell you a thing about it, but it's so compelling you'll want to listen until the very last word.

Everything I have read or listened to by Bill Bryson is excellent. This book may not have been as "laugh out loud" (pretty sure that was not his aim...) but it was incredibly well written and narrated.

One of the most interesting books I’ve listened to. When I finished the first time, I listened to it once more. The author is brilliant. I will listen to it again for sure.

I’ve learned so much about the body in such a fantastically entertaining and easy way. Bryson is brilliant in his ability to make even complicated things make sense. A true sign of a very gifted communicator who has taken great care to explain what he has taken great effort to understand first.

This was a nice listen jammed full of interesting facts about the body. But it's not just about how things work inside, I didn't find as much information about how we work as I'd thought. There was a good, if brief, explanation of the fit, function and form of the various body parts, and then a lot of explanation about the main scientists/doctors that did early work to figure these systems out. There are some fascinating stories contained in the book. But I wish the author would have hired a narrator instead of doing it himself. He has a low voice that doesn't readily lend itself to an audio (ie: radio) format, so I ended up changing all of the bass, treble, and fade settings to better hear, without needing to max out the volume.
