BROWN OF CALAVERAS

Brown of Calaveras — Bret Harte: Set amid the rough mining settlements of Gold Rush–era California, Brown of Calaveras centers on professional gambler Jack Hamlin and the troubled marriage of Brown, a weak-willed miner whose long-absent wife unexpectedly arrives in Wingdam. As Brown prospers, his beautiful wife becomes the center of local attention while their marriage deteriorates, and Brown confides in Jack that he believes she plans to leave him for another man. Jack soon discovers that he himself is the man she intends to run away with, forcing the cynical gambler into an unexpected act of loyalty: he abandons the planned elopement, urges Brown to take his wife away and rebuild their marriage, and rides out of town alone. The story combines frontier humor, romantic irony, and an understated portrait of sacrifice and honor beneath a disreputable exterior.
