Unabridged Audiobook
I enjoyed this fictional depiction of George Orwell’s younger days as a police officer in Burma (as Eric Blair, his real name). I would have liked the author to tell me at the end how closely he stuck to what Orwell told himself in Burmese Days and other writings. The main point is how Blair came to view the Empire as evil, how he was complicit, including abusing Burmese and Indian people, and then feeling guilty, but clearly not guilty enough. It was extremely well told and well narrated. My personal taste would have preferred to hear fewer details about his seedy sexual exploits and use of women, but I don’t doubt the reality of it.
