Summary
#1 NEW YORK TIMES  BESTSELLER

“So immersive, exciting, and downright fabulous, you never want it to end.”—Oprah Daily

“A heart-wrenching, often hilarious story of economic hardship, moral posturing, and the particular yearnings of childless women and motherless girls.”—The New York Times

The multimillion-copy-selling author of The Help returns with a bold, big-hearted novel about a group of unbreakable women, fighting for what’s rightfully theirs—and the power of friendship to change everything.

Oxford, Mississippi, 1933.

Abandoned by her mother one Christmas Eve, eleven-year-old Meg Lefleur has learned the hard way to rely on no one. Now one of the unadoptable 'big girls' at the Lafayette County Orphan Asylum, she fights each day to keep her spirit unbowed.

Birdie Calhoun, unmarried and outspoken, has come to Oxford to ask her socialite sister to help the struggling family she’s left behind. But as the Depression tightens its grip, Birdie discovers her sister’s seemingly charmed life is a tapestry of lies.

Then, Birdie encounters Charlie, a woman running low on luck with little left to lose. When their fates—and Meg’s—converge, Charlie comes up with an audacious plan for them to take control of their lives. But in a place and time where hypocrisy is rife and women’s freedom is fragile, even the smallest act of defiance can have dangerous consequences.

The Calamity Club will make you laugh, cry, and cheer—an epic testament to underestimated women who know that calamity can be the spark of new beginnings. This is Kathryn Stockett at her most confident, heartfelt, and hilarious—the triumphant return of one of the most beloved storytellers of our time.

The narrators were excellent. I especially loved the voice of Meg and actually all the voices were amazing. This book I've listened to for a long time!

I loved this book- so aptly titled. I did originally think that the ending was a little abrupt but I guess it could not have wrapped up another way. I felt sorry for Tom as a character seeing as how well he treated Meg, but he really didn't have a far reaching arc either. Wish he could have divorced Lucille and married Charlie. That would have a happy, although unrealistic (I admit) option seeing the reality of the rest of the story. Would make a great movie, with internal narrations for how Meg and Birdie see the world around them.

Couldn't stop listening. Really well paced story and fleshed out characters. The history behind it is eye opening. Easy to forget women got the right to vote with the 19th amendment in 1920, but not all women. And the other atrocities acted upon poor and unmarried women have been glossed over in the history books. I could see the limited series in my mind. I hope someone options the rights to develop it.

The first half detailed struggles during the depression era in Mississippi, developing the characters, presenting a good blend of harsh history, racism, sexism and classism. The second half went off the rails for me with an outlandish plot change. Desperation for survival made sense, but hanging on to a house that might have been sold in order for the main characters to forge an alliance for the future would have been more consistent. They needed to tell Francis the truth about her husband being gay and a scoundrel that left them in ruin. Maybe exposing the orphanage and using the house and state funding to care for children would have made sense. Could have been shorter. A good author who is gifted at developing interesting layered characters. The Help was amazing.

Felt the ending was rushed a bit, but overall very enjoyable read.

What a fun read! Couldn’t wait to see how it all was going to work out! The cast of characters was perfect! Each one so interesting. All the main ones were likeable funny and smart! Found myself rooting For so many of them, of course mostly for Meg! What a great eye opener to see and understand so many different sides of life. - and all the problems each can face. The narrators were spot on! Great job!

Great story about family, the history in America and how women survive. Lasting characters. A little too long for my liking… I think audio is the way to go for this story.

The writer kept each character interesting and intriguing to the end. Megan, my star character showed how being likable was her way of surviving. I also liked that each character’s story was told in such a way I believed they would all be okay. Hope there is a sequel to this book. Readers like me want more.

I was immediately immersed in the story and concerned about the outcome of the story. I didn’t notice how long the book was and was frankly sad that it ended.

Easily joins the ranks of my top five of all time. The characters really came to life! The narration was just perfection. The story tackled a taboo subject in such a tasteful, human way. The writing kept you invested in every character til the very end. Was sad when it ended. I really look forward to her next novel. She’s fabulous!

Great story and character development. Easy to become invested in the characters. Loved the performance of the narraters.

I loved this book! The characters were so engaging, especially little Meg, Flossie and the other "boarders". I would have happily given it 5 stars but Birdie exasperated me at times with her naïveté that I had to fast forward in spots. And I will also say the narrators were nothing short of phenomenal! I highly recommend!
