Summary
Is love worth betraying everything? Plunge into the second adventure in the internationally bestselling Mortal Instruments series and “prepare to be hooked” (Entertainment Weekly)—now with a gorgeous new cover, a map, a new foreword, and exclusive bonus content! City of Ashes is a Shadowhunters novel.

Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what’s normal when you’re a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and faeries? If Clary left the world of the Shadowhunters behind, it would mean more time with her best friend, Simon, who’s becoming more than a friend. But the Shadowhunting world isn’t ready to let her go—especially her handsome, infuriating, newfound brother, Jace. And Clary’s only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil—and also her father.

To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children. Is Valentine behind the killings—and if he is, what is he trying to do? When the second of the Mortal Instruments, the Soul-Sword, is stolen, the terrifying Inquisitor arrives to investigate and zooms right in on Jace. How can Clary stop Valentine if Jace is willing to betray everything he believes in to help their father?

In this breathtaking sequel to City of Bones, Cassandra Clare lures readers back into the dark grip of New York City’s Downworld, where love is never safe and power becomes the deadliest temptation.

I love how these stories span decades.

Although the series is aimed toward young adults the story is surprisingly pretty good. It can get a little cheesy, and the romance can get a bit to mooshy a times. But the plot is remarkably good. I started out reading a different book altogether a short time ago, and wound up picking up the first book in this series by chance and have yet to put it or the following books in the series down.

I’m the first to admit I wasn’t a huge Mortal Instruments fan. I read the first book and hated the first half, but loved the second half. Still, I never had the desire to continue on with the series. I felt the heroine was very immature in the books and I didn’t like that. I have to say, this is one of the first times I’ve actually liked the movie better than a book. The movie also reignited my interest in the series. I found the actress who played Clary in the movie didn’t come off as immature and now when I read about Clary, I just picture the actress instead of the image I had when reading book 1. Much better. Anyway, Clary is growing on me as the series progresses. I wasn’t too keen on her jumping right into a relationship with Simon, especially considering her feelings for Jace, but I understood it. She’s a teenager and a boy she cares about is in love with her. She doesn’t want to hurt him by admitting she doesn’t feel the same way for him. I think that kind of thing comes with maturity. One of the things I really love about the Mortal Instruments is the world Cassandra Clare has built. It’s quite elaborate, which is probably why it took me so long to get into book one, a lot of world building. But once that’s done the whole concept of the story is awesome. I really enjoyed this one, and this time I liked it enough to straight to book three.

Book: Great sequel. There are just as many new surprises here as the first book and ends with just as many questions. Simon evolves into a stronger character and Jace becomes a more desirable hero. Yummy. Narration: Slight monotone voice. Dialogue voice did not quite meet up to expectations, example, character clearly exclaiming but narrator's voice does not. Lack of dramatic 'tone' that in some ways ruined dramatic scenes.
