Summary
The Civil War: A Narrative, Vol. 1 of this highly acclaimed narrative begins one of the most remarkable works of history ever fashioned.

All the great battles are here, of course, from Bull Run through Shiloh, the Seven Days Battles, and Antietam, but so are the smaller ones: Ball’s Bluff, Fort Donelson, Pea Ridge, Island Ten, New Orleans, and Monitor versus Merrimac.

The word “narrative” is the key to this extraordinary book’s incandescence and its truth. The story is told entirely from the point of view of the people involved in it. One learns not only what was happening on all fronts but also how the author discovered it during his years of exhaustive research.

This first volume in Shelby Foote’s comprehensive history is a must-listen for anyone interested in one of the bloodiest wars in America’s history.

Shelby Foote has been my favorite civil war historian since I first saw him on the Ken Burns Documentary when I was a little boy. It's his voice I hear in my head whenever I read any book about the civil war no matter who it is written by. It's a shame he's no longer around to narrate it himself

Great book

Mr. Foote guides us through the first two years of The American Civil War, and masterfully puts us in a timeline to understand the era. Besides fully skipping the main causes of the war and one point put "Rebellious Traitors" in quotation points, Mr. Foote tries to remain unbiased. Grover Gardner does a excellent job of narrating the story as well and is one of the best narrators I have ever heard. Overall the Novel is 9/10 and narration is 10/10

Love the detail of not only the events, but the forces that led up to them, the personalities involved,(including physical descriptions and their backgrounds.), and the results. My only regret is that Foote didn't narrate himself. While the narrator chosen does a fine job, Shelby's drawling accent would be a gift!

Neglects the economic and social aspects of the History but is adherent to archives and attempts to give an objective storyline.

The audio is not tolerable due to the clipping of words at the beginning of sentences. The book and the narrator were excellent but the quality of the audio made this presentation worthless.
