Summary
This novel of awesome beauty and power is a moving saga about people, relationships, and the boundaries of love.

Nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read

Through Jean M. Auel’s magnificent storytelling we are taken back to the dawn of modern humans, and with a girl named Ayla we are swept up in the harsh and beautiful Ice Age world they shared with the ones who called themselves The Clan of the Cave Bear.

A natural disaster leaves the young girl wandering alone in an unfamiliar and dangerous land until she is found by a woman of the Clan, people very different from her own kind. To them, blond, blue-eyed Ayla looks peculiar and ugly—she is one of the Others, those who have moved into their ancient homeland; but Iza cannot leave the girl to die and takes her with them. Iza and Creb, the old Mog-ur, grow to love her, and as Ayla learns the ways of the Clan and Iza’s way of healing, most come to accept her. But the brutal and proud youth who is destined to become their next leader sees her differences as a threat to his authority. He develops a deep and abiding hatred for the strange girl of the Others who lives in their midst, and is determined to get his revenge.

Great book I could hardly turn it off. I've read the book years ago. But went much faster listening. The narrator was easy to listen to, with good diction.

This book is an interesting adventure story but given the fact that Neanderthals were non verbal, couldn’t tell stories and couldn’t form groups of more than 150 individuals, the premises of this story are too unbelievable to embrace. Their use of medicines and procedures that weren’t known for 50,000 years make it more unimaginable.

Loved this book. The descriptions can get lengthy, but it’s worth it. The world building is great.

I looooove this series ! Already read it a long time ago in my mother tongue, French, and it’s a pleasure to re-discover it in english this time. The only negative thing I’ll say about Jean M Auel’s writing (that have been said before) is that she really does repeat informations a lot. And the narrator has a strange way of pronouncing the « wh » sound (« why », « what », « when », etc). She also uses a lot of nasal voices for the different characters. It’s not unbearable, just a bit odd. Other than that, great narrator, great story, love it

Too much misogyny and racism/classism for my taste.

I have read this series well over 100 times....the reason I gave the narrator a 3 is due to the pronunciation of character names and some other words that drove me a bit annoyed....otherwise it was great....(hard to hear character names pronounced different than you have always heard them in your head when reading to yourself) the fact I have personally read these books so many times speaks for itself as to how I view the series....need I say more?

I ended up liking this book enough to go to the next in the series, which is starting out pretty well. I found Clan of the Cave Bear to be a great concept with a lot of great parts, but also with a lot of parts that were pretty slow-going. I felt that I got hammered countless times with examples of how difficult it was for both Ayla and the clan to live together -- Ayla constantly having to suppress her nature to fit in, and the clan constantly having to make allowances for her behavior and their difficulty in accepting her and their inability to deal with the new and unknown. The author really succeeded in getting me to despise Braud and to love Kreb and Issa. The descriptions of the clan's lifestyle were interesting, as were the author's speculations on their mental abilities -- both their strengths (memory) and limitations (abstraction). I don't care much for the narrator... I guess Davina Porter and the Outlander series, which I just finished, are a very hard act to follow (not to mention Jim Dale and the Harry Potter series). Nevertheless, I'm moving on to Valley of the Horses. I deeply appreciate the author's imagination and story-telling prowess -- well done!

Absolutely loved this book can't wait to listen to the next. You can really tell the author did a ton of research to write this novel. This is a must read! So entertaining!

I have listened to this book over 6 times over 25 years and still enjoy it. I am re-listening now in prep for the latest release. The books do need to be read in order.

absolutely horrendously dull. The fact that it's dated is obvious but if the writing were better we could look beyond that.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was very exciting and feeling. For the most part, it was sad. I don't usually like anything this sad but it was best out of the series so far.

Overall, this is a good book. The narrator, however, was incredibly annoying. Her high pitched voice was awful. The only thing I didn't like about the book itself was the author going on and on about the plants and herbs. A little much.

The story and narration were wonderful but the quality of the CDs was poor. There were many CDs that had skips and several that wouldn't read at all.

I liked the book, and I will be reading the next one in the series soon.

What an excellent and engaging story. I also enjoyed the narrator's voice. I'd recommend it highly and I plan to listen to the rest of the series.

I like to listen to audio books whilst working on various art and craft projects in my workroom and this book was ideal, because it's easy to follow yet thought-provoking. It took me away from the worries of the present day and kept me absorbed for hours on end, which was exactly what I wanted.Another point in its favour is that the reader's voice didn't irritate me as some do. Is there a sequel?

Only book I've listened to, so far, that I couldn't finish... Though I was intrigued with the book's subject and SO wanted to enjoy it, the book nearly put me to sleep. (Far better suited as a bedtime read when you NEED to fall asleep, than behind the wheel...!)

This is a very long story, but very well written. The narration is also excellent. I like the great development of all the characters. ALthough it is a fantasy story, it stil gives you a good idea on how life could have been during the ice-age, what one needed to survive in cruel times. I will now listen to the rest of this series, they promise to be very exiting.
