Abridged Audiobook
it's really interesting to listen to the audiobook
This was an amusing novel that for reasons of hype and marketing, was supposed to be autobiographical. Mr. Barris is a funny man with very amusing ideas. About 20% of the book recounts some true expereriences of the author. The rest is pure fantasy woven around a patina of some true events. You don't realize what the deal really is until the second or third page. After that its a running joke. I howled. This book is a game show of sorts as it plays with human foibles big time. What surprised me is how vulgar and cynical this man is, or has become. Mr. Barris laughs his way to another payday. In the process he reveals a depraved person with florid narcissism. I would not want to meet this guy in real life. Not because he is a killer. Only because he is a complete jerk.
Not good as fiction, not good as "autobiography". I never saw the movie, but can't imagine it's any better. If I could give it 0 stars I would.
Only listened to the first half.Compelling at first, but became fed-up with Barris' egomania, unbelievable storytelling and disregard for others. Gave me that waste of time feeling, like when you're sitting there listening to someone's endless gossip, not knowing how much is true.
Interesting, but somewhat unbelievable. The story telling could have used some more details and/or description to make it more interesting.
We enjoyed this book... Having a memorable 'character' like Barris makes the story simultaneously fantastical and utterly believable... aspects of any good conspiracy theory. He's adventurerous, funny, and ultimately believable. Rollicking good fun!
