Unabridged Audiobook
I have loved the movie for years. I was hesitant to listen to the book. Overall I was impressed. There were quite a few fundamental issues in the book that were different than the movie. Enough to feel it was a worth while listen. Some of the chapters on religion vs science were dull, but that may be because I've heard all the arguments before.
I have always meant to read this one, but the opportunity had never arisen. Now that I have I can confidently say that this is one of my favorite Hard Science Fiction books I have ever read. Carl Sagan is truly missed and I think the world would be a better place if more had been open to his message. The narrator has such a calm, gentle, and understanding voice, very easy to listen. The only real issue is some of her accents are a little wonky.
4.5 stars This isn’t a hit-you-like-a-freight-train kind of story. This is a burrow-under-your-skin-and-stay-with-you-forever kind of story. It’s perhaps not the easiest to get into given the amount of scientific language and content—aud iobooks are so helpful with books like this, and the narrator here did a wonderful job—and its mid-80s viewpoint does hinder it in certain aspects (although it was interesting to learn what Sagan thought the end of the millennium would be like), but it’s incredibly affecting nonetheless. If you enjoy books that ask the big questions and make you think, read this. Oh, and the movie’s pretty great, too. CW: sexism, Islamophobia and xenophobia in general (stereotypes), ableist language (mainly outdated terminology), violence, death, loss of a parent, grief
Underrated and very good if you like big thinking science fiction
A work of art.
