“Imagine, the letters one has sent out into the world, the letters received back in turn, are like the pieces of a magnificent puzzle. . . . Isn’t there something wonderful in that, to think that a story of one’s life is preserved in some way, that this very letter may one day mean something, even if it is a very small thing, to someone?”

Filled with knowledge that only comes from a life fully lived, The Correspondent is a gem of a novel about the power of finding solace in literature and connection with people we might never meet in person. It is about the hubris of youth and the wisdom of old age, and the mistakes and acts of kindness that occur during a lifetime.

Sybil Van Antwerp has throughout her life used letters to make sense of the world and her place in it. Most mornings, around half past ten, Sybil sits down to write letters—to her brother, to her best friend, to the president of the university who will not allow her to audit a class she desperately wants to take, to Joan Didion and Larry McMurtry to tell them what she thinks of their latest books, and to one person to whom she writes often yet never sends the letter.

Sybil expects her world to go on as it always has—a mother, grandmother, wife, divorcee, distinguished lawyer, she has lived a very full life. But when letters from someone in her past force her to examine one of the most painful periods of her life, she realizes that the letter she has been writing over the years needs to be read and that she cannot move forward until she finds it in her heart to offer forgiveness.

Sybil Van Antwerp’s life of letters might be “a very small thing,” but she also might be one of the most memorable characters you will ever read.

I absolutely loved this book! So clever, heartwarming… a testimony to the human spirit and the complications of a full life. Narrators were excellent. The closing words were like leaving a dear friend.

Profile Avatar Arlene F. Oct 2025

The many narrators brought the book to life. In all honesty, I think this was the best book that I have ever listened to in two years. The emotion, the accents and the professionalism of all of the narrators was pure perfection. Clearly, they are all actors and actresses because it was so enjoyable. Add in the writing and this book was pure perfection!

Profile Avatar Carmen Herman Oct 2025

This will go down as one of my favorite books. The narration was phenomenal; loved the accents, personalities, depth of characters. The story actually took me from laughter to tears. Virginia Evans is an elegant AND eloquent writer.

Profile Avatar Lorraine S. Dec 2025

This audiobook is truly something special. The full cast of narrators adds incredible depth and emotion, making each letter feel personal and alive. The story itself is both humorous and heartbreaking—a reflection on relationships, aging, and the power of written words. This is the kind of audiobook that stays with you long after it ends.Perfect for listeners who love emotional, character-driven stories.

I was totally drawn to this book. Certainly some neatly tied up plots but on the whole a thoughtful and insightful book into a fully realized character.

Profile Avatar Dariia H. Jan 2026

The Correspondent turned out to be a surprisingly heartfelt read. The beginning was confusing and hard to follow—I struggled with who was who for the first part—but once the story settled, I found myself genuinely curious and emotionally invested. It’s a quiet, thoughtful reflection on how life unfolds and how even small decisions can shape everything. Not perfect, but meaningful. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️½

Profile Avatar Charlotte Feb 2026

Since I listened to the book, say the name and addresses each time was tedious to listen to.

Profile Avatar Claire M. Feb 2026

Loved this production. I was a little nervous at first given the number of narrators but it worked so well. I really liked the characters and story unfolding through all the various letters. Hopefully not a lost art.

Profile Avatar Jennifer P. Jan 2026

This book is glorious. The beautiful narration enriched it tremendously. I honestly didn't want it to end. Every listener was likely reminded of people from our own lives through these marvelous characters. I am 53 and this audio book was recommended to me by my 25 year old niece. I recommended it to my 90 year old mother. It offers something for everyone. LOVED IT! This book is definitely in my top 10 favorite books of all time.

Profile Avatar Hildegunn A. Dec 2025

Excellent. Unsure in the beginning, but didn’t want it to end.

I loved this book- the concept, the content, all of it! The power of the written word shines through!

Profile Avatar Katie M. Dec 2025

I loved this book - couldn't wait to drive somewhere to continue the story. Having all the characters with their own voices was wonderful. While I don't think this rates as fine literature it's a marvelous book and I've already recommended it to many friends. Thanks to the author, narrators and Audiobooks!

Profile Avatar Merritt T. Jun 2026

Lovely, just lovely. The Corespondent is refreshing in both content, construction, and perspective. I feel as a young adult reader that at my stage of life, there is an expectation that we reach an endpoint to character growth and healing, that one day we arrive at the fullness of ourselves and live the rest of our days in wholeness. I felt challenged in that understanding as I read this book with its mature characters, watching how life continues in its challenges and we continue in our growth along with it until our chapter on this earth is complete. Highly recommend this book for those who are looking for something thoughtful and grounding in this immediate-result driven world.

Profile Avatar Gina O Jun 2026

This book was recommended by a dear girlfriend. We often discuss books we read. I love stories that cultivate women characters where they are strong, resilient with the right amount of compassion. That as they grow and mature their wisdom, is by nature sought after as a mentor or someone to look up to. As I disliked the main character I was reminded that we all have the capacity for change through our choices. I highly recommend this book especially if you need a genre change! Enjoy

Profile Avatar Alicia P. May 2026

Profile Avatar Christine R. May 2026

A beautifully and cleverly written story that we can all relate to on some level! I loved it!

Profile Avatar Anonymous Apr 2026

The format was unique, the story a tangled and complex like many, and the different narrators gave life to each character.

Profile Avatar Alicia P. Apr 2026

Excellent book with EXCELLENT narration!!! Absolutely must read and then start writing letters to people you care about!

Profile Avatar Anonymous Apr 2026

Amazing story. Kept me interested through the whole book.

Profile Avatar Debbie H Apr 2026

I enjoyed this book a lot. The intimacy of letter writing has been so lost. This book made me want to write to all my friends.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Apr 2026

Sweet story of insight

Profile Avatar Donna S. Apr 2026

This book uses a format I hadn’t encountered before, telling its story through letters—a clever approach that draws you in immediately. You quickly find yourself anticipating each response, trying to piece together who the unsent letters are truly meant for. It works especially well as an audiobook, as the distinct voices of the characters bring the story to life and make it deeply engaging.

Profile Avatar KalaAnna Apr 2026

Really enjoyed this one!

Profile Avatar Elo D. Apr 2026

Really well written, interesting character development, I envoyed the dramatised naration

Profile Avatar Anonymous Apr 2026

I love this story of grief and families and love and friendship…this book has it all. So well written. I wanted more letters, I wanted to know more of her life.

Profile Avatar Miriam W. Apr 2026

Amazing! Could not stop listening until the end and cried like a baby. Wonderful story and extremely well produced. Thank you.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Apr 2026

An absolute must read

Profile Avatar Anonymous Apr 2026

I thought it started off slow and that there were too many unnecessary characters to keep track of. However, when I changed to audiobook from reading, it helped me a lot. I really got into the story and the characters and I listened to it over 3 days. The grief and the joys hit close to my heart. I’m very happy I stuck with it.

Profile Avatar Ann A. Apr 2026

Wow . . . Wooooow! What a great read, very different but effective story telling. A sweet and touching story about getting out of your own way. The narrators, all of them, were exceptional!

Profile Avatar Shirley S. Apr 2026

I was blown away at the beautifully performed audio of this exquisitely written book!

Profile Avatar D'Ann B. Apr 2026

Amusing and engaging

Profile Avatar Sarah J. Mar 2026

Excellent narration. Fascinating book. Held my interest well!

Profile Avatar Ann B. Mar 2026

This is a beautiful story, rich characters. I love that it takes place through letters and that each letter writer is voiced by a different actor.

Profile Avatar Jennifer C. Mar 2026

I very rarely can’t finish a book but I could not hold on any longer. The insufferable voice of this woman and her presumptive letters to authors was too much for me. I could feel the lame romance approaching as well as the subplot of ruining someone’s life and I just didn’t care.

Profile Avatar Byrdi Mar 2026

I liked the various narrators. They added so much

Profile Avatar Anonymous Mar 2026

I’m not really sure why everyone likes this book? I’ve heard so much praise but hype did not match the read. The protagonist is a crotchety old women who isn’t in the least bit likeable. It’s a cool concept but I found it profoundly boring. I listen while I’m working (I’m in the trades and listen to books all day) perhaps it’s just not my genre. People seem to like it so my opinion shouldn’t matter.

Profile Avatar Jo Ann R. Mar 2026

Virginia Evans masterfully tells Sybil's story through her own words and those with whom she corresponds. Emotional and heartwarming...Narrators are absolutely perfect.

Profile Avatar Tamra H. Mar 2026

Love this so much. Loved the different voices for each character

Profile Avatar Driving Mar 2026

Great voices. I completely this very quickly. It was such a nice read.

Profile Avatar Jerome C. Mar 2026

Excellent narration, very well written

Profile Avatar Laura W. Mar 2026

I only wish that I had written this book. It is a work of art. The writing and the narration are impeccable. I feel I know all the characters more intimately than I may have if I had read this in written form rather than listen to it in an audiobook. That is how good the narration is, and I can’t imagine sticking with it if I had only read it. Recommend for those who love relationship and communication.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Mar 2026

It’s a good book and worth a listen. There are a lot of good characters in here. It will keep you “turning the page.”

Profile Avatar Gale C. Feb 2026

Fabulous

Profile Avatar Rebecca T. Feb 2026

Tender story of the inner workings of a fine cast of characters’ hearts and minds. I grew to love the story after my initial resistance.

Profile Avatar Teresa N. Feb 2026

This book took me completely by surprise. I didn’t know anything about this book except for the good reviews. So I gave it a listen. I was blown away. The story told through written communications between numerous individuals gave the book a structure I’d never seen before. But wow, the impact was deep with emotion. In the beginning when I heard about the numerous narrators, I thought what’s going on, that’s a lot of narrators. I’ve never heard of a book with more than three or four people reading it. But the characters in this book came alive, and seemed real with authentic emotions because of the different voices reading the different parts. This is an exceptionally well written story and equally well produced in audio. This is my favorite book of all time. Thank you Virginia Evans for your talent and dedication to writing. I can’t wait to read more or your work.

Profile Avatar EG Feb 2026

Very, very good listen. It took a bit to get used to the to/from announcements but important to capture.

Profile Avatar Nancy F. Feb 2026

I listened to this - and now what to listen again. The many layers of the story were deftly woven together. It made me smile and cry. I know we will enjoy the discussion of it in the next book club meeting!

Profile Avatar Anonymous Feb 2026

What a great book...really enjoyed the characters growth.

Profile Avatar Meg Lowry Feb 2026

What a touching story that inspires the sharing of one's self through letter writing.

Profile Avatar Thea C. Jan 2026

Took me a minute to realize the book was written in letters but I’ve listened to it twice and I love it. Great emotions and characters and fun.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jan 2026

Way too long. Found the Sybil character annoying, pretentious and obnoxious. This character just drones on and on and is selfish and self centered. These characters are not relatable to the average person. This is how old rich people sound.

Profile Avatar Linda B. Jan 2026

Probably would have been better to read this rather than listen to all the iterations of the subjects os the correspondence.

Profile Avatar Mojgan B. Jan 2026

Wonderful narration. Uses a classic genre with modern details.

Profile Avatar Amanda B. Jan 2026

This was a book I will come back to. I loved this so much. The different narrators just made the story and the emotions were so real.. what a great story!

Profile Avatar Amber R. Jan 2026

Simply amazing writing! My favorite book of 2025. The main character is funny, witty, sarcastic, and so lovable.. I keep recommending this book to everyone. I have so many books on my TBT list, but I am going to reread this during 2026.

Profile Avatar Jane T. Jan 2026

Multilayered, inspiring story beautifully told through letters.

Profile Avatar Melissa C. Jan 2026

This book is nothing like I usually read (mostly true crime and romantasy) and I couldn't wait to get out of work and listen some more. And by far, the audiobook is the best I've ever heard. What a great start to my 2026 reading life!!

Profile Avatar Kim W. Jan 2026

Profile Avatar Gogurlgail Jan 2026

This was a beautiful book. Beautiful story, tender and honest. The narration was also great. I was absorbed from beggining to end.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jan 2026

I really enjoyed this novel. I loved the format of letters being read by the characters. Not read by one voice but each participant in the letter writing with their own voice. It was a theatre.

Lovely story and excellent narration.

Profile Avatar Rhonda S. Jan 2026

Profile Avatar MaryAnn N. Dec 2025

Great story

Profile Avatar Katfish Dec 2025

This book may be my favorite of 2025. I absolutely loved the plot, the characters, and the lifting up of written correspondence, which is quickly becoming a lost art. I tried to savor this story, but it was so hard to pause! Read this book! You will be thankful that you did.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Dec 2025

This story unfolds gracefully and beautifully. It takes the reader around the world touching on the common thread of what it is to be human. The voice actors brought the story to life brilliantly. I loved this story.

The voice actors were great! Beautiful story to follow along.

Profile Avatar Mary F. Nov 2025

I loved this book! The narrators were wonderful and the story developed as you got further in the book.

Profile Avatar Floy K. Oct 2025

It took a little while to get used to the style, reading letters, and then it was confusing at first who all the characters were. I really liked it, but there were some storylines that I felt were left unfinished.
