In a bustling Manhattan café at midnight, an unnamed narrator meets E. Rushmore Coglan, a swaggering globe‑trotter who swears he’s a citizen of the world and loyal to no patch of earth. With trademark wit, O. Henry skewers vanity and provincial pride as Coglan grandly mocks borders, boasts of far‑flung adventures, and preaches universal brotherhood—until a single slight about his obscure hometown ignites a spectacular brawl. The punchline lands with O. Henry’s irresistible twist: for all our passports and boasts, our invisible roots still tug the hardest.

Mike Polischuk delivers a lively, precise performance that captures the café’s clink and chatter, Coglan’s blustering charm, and the sly smile beneath every line. Smart, funny, and brisk, this classic short story is a perfect bite‑sized listen for your commute or coffee break—ideal for fans of ironic humor, character sketches, and timeless American storytelling. Press play for a sparkling satire of identity and belonging that proves the heart is the most local thing on earth.
