Rodion Raskolnikov, a former student living in a coffin-sized room in St Petersburg, has talked himself into a theory: an extraordinary man may step over the moral law if his purpose is great enough. To prove it he kills an old pawnbroker with an axe - and her half-sister, who walks in at the wrong moment. He takes almost nothing, hides it under a stone, and falls into a fever.

What follows is one of the most gripping novels ever written: a murderer who cannot stop returning to the scene, a patient investigator, Porfiry Petrovich, who seems to know everything and waits for Raskolnikov to come to him, and Sonya Marmeladova, forced onto the streets to feed her family, whose quiet faith becomes the one door left open. Around them Dostoevsky crowds the heat, drink, debt and noise of a summer city.

Crime and Punishment is a detective story told from inside the criminal's mind and a searching argument about guilt, suffering and redemption. This new translation presents it complete and unabridged.
