I was so fascinated by this book but ultimately hated the pulp-fiction, b-grade narration that it fell into. While it does have some great turns of phrase, it is annoying in the same way Ken Follett or Dan Brown is annoying — once you’ve read someone like Chimamanda Ngozie Adichie, it’s just painfully blah writing meant to keep the pages turning. Characters’ motives are all explained instead of demonstrated, sex scenes sound like they’re plucked from bad romance novels, etc.
