The Cruel Sea

Unabridged Audiobook

Written By: Nicholas Monsarrat

Narrated By: Simon Vance

Publisher: Blackstone Audiobooks

Date: February 2016

Duration: 17 hours 50 minutes

Summary:

Based on the author's own vivid experiences, The Cruel Sea is the nail-biting story of the crew of HMS Compass Rose, a corvette assigned to protect convoys during World War II.

Darting back and forth across the icy North Atlantic, Compass Rose played a deadly cat-and-mouse game with packs of German U-boats lying in wait beneath the ocean waves.

Packed with tension and vivid descriptions of agonizing U-boat hunts, this tale of the most bitter and chilling campaign of the war tells of ordinary men who had to master their own fears before they could face a brutal menace-one which would strike without warning from the deep.

"An impressive novel, portraying the war at sea with emotion, drama, tenderness, and terror."-Chicago Tribune

Genres:

  • Peter H.

Superbly conveys the full range of emotions and thoughts from officers to enlisted men to women during war. Nicely tries to make some sense of the chaos of war. One of the most realistic war books I have read.

  • Rhonda Armstrong

Book and narration were excellent. . I only have a little gripe. . .I like to listen to the books while in bed just before sleep on my Toshiba tablet. . another app has a sleep timer which allows me to set and forget this app would be really great if allowed something like that.
