Summary
September 1940 is finally drawing to a close. With London having endured the Blitz for nearly a month, people are calling for vengeance: Britain should retaliate even harder with their own bombing campaign in enemy territory. But once again the night heralds more destruction. At Custom House, anxious residents dutifully head to the nearest public air-raid shelter as the warning siren wails. When dawn brings the all-clear people disperse, but one man remains – he's dead, stabbed through the heart. As Detective Inspector John Jago begins his investigation, he discovers that the victim was one of a minority – a pacifist. But why, then, was he carrying a loaded revolver in his pocket?

This is my first time to read this author and only regret I hadn’t started with Book 1 instead of Book 3. First of all let me say there is a good bit of dialogue about pacifism, God, war, “love thy neighbor, hate thy enemy”, etc. But.. it’s OK. Perhaps more importantly let me say that is NOT written with the tone nor “motive” that so-called Christian authors are spewing out religious content in their works of what is most often described as “clean” fiction. This book simply expresses the feelings and concerns of people caught up in the bombing of London.. the Blitz. As time goes along, some characters change their positions; some feel more than ever justified; some are moved by things they aren’t willing to attribute to a God but nonetheless can’t explain. And yet Jesus himself said, “.. ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”… Insofar as the story of the book itself is concerned, it is very interesting. The characters are, with a few exceptions, likable, and the narrator “voiced” them perfectly. Certainly plan to read/listen to more of the author’s books in the series.

An historical fiction novel set during the beginnings of the nightly bombings of London, WWII. A murder has been committed in one of London's bomb shelters. Many subplots in this crime fiction story - theft of Council funds ear-marked for the construction of more bomb shelters, a murder, bribery, corrupt politicians, blackmail, adultery, conscientious objectors to the war, the daily rounds of searching through the rubble for survivors of the previous night's bombings...and the difficulty of declaring one's love for the woman who has been in his heart for years. A very satisfying ending.
