Dave Portnoy Biography: Sports, Scandal, and the Rise of El Presidente

This audiobook is narrated by a digital voice.

Dave Portnoy was broke. Bankrupt at twenty-six. Owed money to credit card companies, owed money to his own father, and had nothing to show for it except a gambling problem and a college degree he never planned to use.

So he borrowed twenty thousand dollars from his dad, loaded a U-Haul with his mom, and started handing out a free four-page sports newspaper on the streets of Boston. No staff. No investors. No plan. Just a loud guy with strong opinions and a stubborn refusal to quit.

That newspaper became Barstool Sports. And that broke kid became El Presidente.

This book tells the full story. The early days of fake writers and illegal poker ads. The shift from print to internet. The rise of the Stoolies. The crude jokes and the controversies that should have ended his career but somehow made him bigger. The Chernin deal that made him a millionaire. The Penn deal that made him worth nine figures. The day he bought his own company back for one dollar.

It covers Davey Day Trader and the pandemic stock market circus. The Barstool Fund that raised thirty-nine million dollars for small businesses when the government couldn't get its act together. The Business Insider allegations that threatened everything. The defamation lawsuit. The Fox Sports deal. The pizza reviews that turned a hobby into a cultural force. The rescue dog that became more famous than he is.

Dave Portnoy is one of the most polarizing figures in American media. Half the country thinks he's a genius. The other half thinks he's a menace. This biography doesn't pick a side. It tells the story straight. The good, the bad, the ugly, and the parts that are somehow all three at the same time.

From bankruptcy to a quarter-billion-dollar empire. From subway platforms to Nantucket mansions. From a cardboard sign written in pen to a Fox Sports contract and a Netflix deal.

This is the story of a man who bet everything on himself. Over and over again. And kept winning. Even when he probably shouldn't have.
