Summary
Elizabeth and Nathaniel Bonner have settled into their life together at the edge of the New York wilderness in the winter of 1794. Soon word reaches them that Nathaniel's father has been arrested by crown officials in British Canada. Nathaniel sets out, determined to see his father freed. Instead, Nathaniel is imprisoned and finds himself in danger of being hanged as a spy. Elizabeth soon discovers that freeing Nathaniel will take every ounce of her courage and inventiveness. Torn apart, the Bonners must embark on another voyage...this time to the heart of Scotland where a wealthy Earl claims kinship with Nathaniel's father. With this journey, a whole new world opens up to Nathaniel and Elizabeth - and a destiny they could never have imagined awaits them.

'Better buy some midnight oil, for this hugely satisfying novel is a page-turner.' (Orlando Sentinel)

Enjoyed every bit of this great story. Kate Reding has a wonderful way of bringing life to each character by just changing her voice ever so. And the many dialects she does so well, truly amazing. I was scared I would never find anything as good as the Outlander series but I was wrong. I am enjoying this just the same. I’m looking forward to the next in the Wilderness series.

I found this book a bit slow in some places, however really liked the twists

I want to love this book and the story is interesting but it just doesn’t stand up against the really great works of Gabeldon, RR Martin or Stedman. The main characters struggles are dictated by outside forces with little exploration of their internal struggles. The dialogue is equally lacking depth. I am becoming more interested in the story of Hannah than I am of Elizabeth and Nathanial.

I have enjoyed this book greatly. She makes the characters so vivid you actually get to know them. Kate Reding is also able to give character to each person. Her different dialect's her Scott, English, and Indian voices are excellent. Can't wait to continue with the next book in the Wilderness series!!
